I have been surfing this afternoon and thought this would be a cool project for all of us to post Quilting Tips and just found this one for us.
Sewing Needles Tips: I never liked the idea of changing my sewing machine needle with every project. Instead I sharpen them by sewing (without thread) through a piece of fine sandpaper. It gives me a fresh needle everytime (unknown) |
I never thought about doing that. Thanks.

what a great idea!

*Fill up two bobbins and use one of them for the top thread. That way both the bobbin and top thread will run out at the same time (how many of us have continued to sew without knowing we were out of bobbin thread?)
*Instead of throwing away dull rotary blades, save them and use them to cut wrapping paper. *I bought a lot of Moda marbles for my current project, but they don't put the fabric number on the selvage like they do on the end of the bolt. So I wrote down the fabric compant, fabric number, and where its supposed to go in my project on a sticky note and stick it right to the fabric (like "Moda Marble 9802 Nabooru Color 3"). Sometimes I'll get ideas right in the quilt shop, buy the fabric, and then forget what the heck I bought it for so I have used the sticky notes to remind me why I bought that particular fabric. |
Great ideas!

I don't know if this is really a tip or not, but ----- When I finish piecing a top I always have leftover fabric from that project. I've started cutting all of my leftovers into 2 1/2 inch strips. Then when I need to do something to keep my hands busy and my mouth quiet, I pull out my strip collection and make tops like log cabin, rail fence, scrappy single Irish chain (or anything else). I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the color of strip, just the light, medium or dark tone.

I don't think it can be said oft enough .... measure measure measure!
|
when I start a new pattern/project I make myself a cheat sheet (on an index card). with colors and sizes and block numbers....of everything I need to cut..
Easier to follow some times than the complex pattern where everything is on a different page.... |
DeborahLees comment .... when I start a new pattern/project I .... made me think of this ................
When I start a new project, I set all the fabric aside for that project and do not use any of it for anything else, until I know the project is totally done. Not even a smidgeon of it. That way I have no regrets later should I shift gears and want to vary from the pattern a wee bit, extend a border .... or do a coordinating item. Sometimes it's annoying though, as right now I am tempted to dig into some fabric I have in my Basket WIP, but keep saying noooooo! |

Don't know how great of a tip this is, but since I usually have a few projects going at once, odd how they all finish around the same time, I keep them in gift bags with everything I need, the pattern, pieces, the tread I'm using, backing if I have it, and any special quilting pattern sheets. Then I have a seperate basket with needles, extra thread and bobbins, scissors, thimble, chalk, anything that I need. Then when I want to work on something, I just grab the bag and the basket and I know I'll have everything I need!
