I just have to share this.
Yesterday at work a mother and her DD were shopping for fabric. They picked out two totally different kinds/prints etc.
I asked them how much they needed cut. The mother looked from me to her DD who didn't hesitate to say."I need a quarter of a yard of each, please."

I asked her (the DD) want she was going to make. She said she was going to make a night gown for her doll.
Her mother asked her what she was going to make with the other fabric (a floral calico with blue and red flowers). DD said, "I don't know yet, I just like it."

I leaned over to her and said, " That's what we quilters and sewers call our 'stash'.

The DD said, "I know (Big smile) I have a lot of stash already!" she giggled.

I adored her. She was maybe 8 years old if that!

There is hope for the younger ones coming up behind us older folks!

OHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! that is way beyond cute. my dd loves to go and touch all the different fabric. it is fun. I think that that young girl is in for the wonderful world of quilting and sewing. She already had the fabric bug. hehe

That is so cute. My GD has a stash already too. She keeps it in her sock drawer (her idea). She is fond of fabrics with kitties on it.

My DGD was visiting the fabric store with me when she was 5 years old and buying fat quarters for her stash then. She now know she can raid my stash because as she says "quilters always share". Aren't they funny.

That's cute. I went to Hancock fabrics, with my DGD (she's almost three) and she told the clerk that we were at Hancock's and she needed 3/4 yard please. It was just to cute, that the clerk actually gave her a piece (6") of fabric. She often sits on my lap to help me sew.

It is a wonder what they pick up when they spend so much of their time "helping" us sew.

I loved that. So young and she is gonna carry on the tradition.

And Mom encourages her, isn't that great ! It is the small things that make the best memories :lol: Hope she keeps it up

my 11yo just loves fabric! She's made one quilt already and is planning her next one. This one will be lap quilt she said.

My daughter (2 1/2) loves coming to the fabric store with me...she loves all the "pretties" as she calls them, and she already seems to know what she likes and does not like. She too helps me sew and quilt and loves it!! Definitely a future quilter here!

Just think how much fabric she will have by the time she is 40.

My daughter has no interest. She took shop instead of home economics. My granddaughter is amazed and very interested in sewing, crochet, needlework, etc.

My kids always, and still do, shop in my fabric/craft stash. They finally learned that if they want their fingers, they better leave my scissors alone! They are both in college now, and I guess they like their fingers.

If you would send me a pm, I have a piece of kitten fabric and some scraps of "kittens on the beach" for this little girl. Dotty

My granddaughter is 9 years old and she was in a fabric store with her step-sister (who is learning to sew at 17) and she was in heaven. My daughter said she was touching all the fabrics and saying what this piece or that piece would look good made up and my daughter told her "you definitely are your grandmother's granddaughter. She is wanting me to teach her to sew, so I think that might be a good project for this summer. I know 9 years isn't too early to start, because I started making doll clothes much earlier than that.

My 3 yearold Grandaughter loves fabric she picks out a fat quarter each time she goes shopping with me, I think it will make a great scrappy quilt when she get older.

Just think if the size of stash she will have starting that young, impressive! Can't wait till my DGD is a bit older and can start on loving fabric and quilting/sewing. She's 22 months so getting there!! Love all these cute stories, keep 'em coming ladies and gents.

When my grand daughter was about 3 she went shopping with me. Crawled up on the shelf on the end of the cutting counter and when Sharon asked her how much she would like of her fabric her answer was "1/4" please". Sharon thought it was so cute. I'm think she was wanting a fat quarter. She and I are the best of buddies and ever since practically day 1 Richelle and grandma add to her fat quarter collection. She loves to sew and uses my featherweight when she is here. She is 8 now. Her sister Josie also loves to sew so I am so lucky. Now the little 2 year old has discovered that she loves fabric also. I am so lucky because my 2 daughters and both daughters in law all quilt and now the little girls are joining us.

I'm still hoping my little GD will be interested in sewing...her mom never was, but has a great sense of color. Neither of the other two girls sew, either, but the youngest of the three is an artist, and paints for her artistic outlet.

Yes, I think it could be. My mother did knitting, crochet, embroidery (cross stich, hardanger etc.) and she was very good in sewing clothes. I started knitting when I was 5 years old, my sister as well. I'm sure I was born for some kind of needlework - I only don't know where the passion for quilting came from! I saw the first book about quilts in 1989 when I was 23...

My son wants to make his own quilt! He is 7.

My Neice is 4 1/2 & so funny in quilt stores now. She picks out material & tells me what I should use in a project. She has her own machine now too without the needle in it. She asked if when she is 5 if she can have the needle put in. It's pretty funny just wait till she finds out about our quilting retreat weekend!! Then we'd be in trouble

When I was in 4-H, 9 was the age that you started. Sometimes a confident 8 year old could join. My niece was in it a couple of years ago and it was more about putting an outfit together with accessories than the sewing. I'm glad to see young ones interested.

I also started sewing while in 4-H. I was 9 yrs old and made my first outfit, skirt & blouse. Our 4-H leader was the County Economist or whatever their title is. She taught us cooking and sewing. WE had a great time.
