Show and Tell at guild meetings
 

How many quilts are too many to show during Show and Tell at guild meetings? I know there aren't rules or anything, but I have four ready, and I KNOW that is hogging the time, but is three too many? Three of my quilts are ready for charity and I hadn't intended to show them, but they ended up looking quite good. The fourth I know I want to show.

I didn't know we were having Show and Tell at our last meeting or I would have shown two of these already. The other two I have made since then.

So, how many quilts is too many? Should I select just two of these to share??

It is an occasion when I get up to show a quilt. Some people show 2 or 3 especially if they are to be donated.Hugs

Since some are for charity, I say show them all!!! I know in our meetings I love to see what other people are making!!!!

I would show them all. I know that "show and tell" can be time consuming at guild meetings, but if you feel you are taking too much of the time, you can help by moving things quickly when you are up front. Ask a friend to help unfold, hold up the quilts, remove, fold, etc.

what about showing the one you really want to show first, and then say something to the effect that you have 3 charity quilts, too if folks want to come over and look at.

Take all you want to show and if anyone complains just tell them you would love to see all the quilt projects they've been working on also. I'm curious as to how long the guild meetings last. Does everyone stay for the whole meeting or do they come and go?

At our meetings, we have no time limit. Everyone shows whatever they want to show and then we move on to the lesson or demonstration. Some people show several. Some show one. It's all good.

In my guild, which is very small (total membership runs about 55), if the charity quilts are for the guild's charity projects, there is no limit to how many you show. If you are showing quilts that you have made for personal use or gifts, etc., we limit those to 3. A non-quilt item, such as a purse, pillow, etc., counts the same as a quilt. We decided to limit the number of quilts because we meet at night and S&T is usually the last item on the agenda. We usually average about 40 member at our meetings, and there are usually 5-10 participating in S&T, so it can run long.

In our guild, which is not large, usually 5-6 gals have quilts to "show". There is no set rule or limit on the number you show. Sometimes gals have 3/4 sometimes only one. It all seems to even out - sometimes we have a lot sometimes it is only a few.

Thanks for everyone's input. I still don't know how many quilts I will show, but I would like to show all four. I don't usually talk when I show mine (other than mentioning the name of the pattern and if it is a charity quilt), so it shouldn't take long. The line for Show and Tell is usually about 20 ladies long. I may take my quilts and at least show the one I really want to and "go with the flow" from then. Last month there were only about 7 ladies who shared, but I suspect that, like me, most members didn't know we would have a Show and Tell, since it was a "silent auction and pot luck meal" meeting. There may be 30 lined up this time, and then I will certainly just show one quilt.

Our meetings (with program) usually last about an hour and a half.

I just realized I didn't answer both of your questions. Most people stay for the whole meeting. There is a business meeting, Show and Tell, and then a program. Sometimes a few leave before the program, but not often. The meeting starts at 7:00 and is over by 9:00. "Social hour" starts at 6:30 with refreshments.

We have no limit to how many one person can show. But remember, adults can have short attentions spans, just like children, so keep the explanation of each brief. Too many rules can dull a guild.

Both the guilds I belong to meet at 9:30 am so we have all day. The more Show and Tell we have the better. It's our favorite part of the meeting and we encourages everyone to bring all they want. If we have no workshop scheduled most of us stay and use the afternoon as a sew day. I wouldn't like guild meetings that were limited in time. Most members are like me in thinking once we are there may as well stay the day. When I worked I took off the day of guild meeting at least 1/2 a day if I couldn't stay all day.

Show all 4, if I were there I would love looking at quilts. This is where you get ideas and motivation.

I think you definitely should show all four. I don't know a quilter who doesn't love show and tell. I just can't figure out why your guild has a "line". At ours we just ask for S& T from each long table, one at a time, and no one has to stand in line. We just take turns standing up with our quilts when it's turn for those at our table. I think your guild should come up with another system so there's no show and tell line. Who wants to stand in line holding bulky or heavy things?

We have a line, but you don't have to stand there the whole time. Think if it as more like a que.

We show our quilts front and center where the microphone is. The historian takes a picture of each quilt. She doesn't have to move around much this way.

Awhile back people were called by name from the show and tell registration sheet. That took much more time, as each person had to get up from where they were sitting.

I think each guild finds a way that works for them.

At our guild meetings not everyone brings a quilt and we all enjoy looking and looking so "the more, the merrier!"

We are supposed to sign in when we arrive, and part of that is a Show and Tell Sign Up Sheet. Then when it is time for Show and Tell, a line forms, but there is no real order to it...we don't have to show up in the order we signed in. I wonder if there is a way to avoid the line. I'm not sure there is. We sort of go to the front so all can see. We help each other show the quilts, so usually it doesn't take too long. There are always a few who go on and on, but I am not one of those. Short but sweet, that's my motto.

You all have me ready to take all four quilts and show them. Our next meeting is in two weeks. If I don't change my mind, that is what I will do. :) Thanks again.

I would say to take all the quilts to the stage, show your first quilt and ask if people want to see the charity quilts. I'll bet the answer will be yes.

I agree, I always love seeing quilts, the more the better

I would show them all - anyone who can accomplish that much should be proud to show them off. I usually go to the work days for our guild - we have a brief meeting and chair people share information about events and we have show and tell. I love seeing everything that others make!! It inspires me to see what others have done.

I would rather have Show & Tell ...skip the business meeting!

Our meeting is also in the evening. We have no limit on the number of things we may show at one time. Would not want to miss seeing what someone has made before it goes to a new home, which is the case for a lot of our quilted things.
It usually does not take a lot of time.

No limit in our guild and I'm GLAD! I love to see the creativity, color combinations, patterns, and just pure hard work that our members have done. Show 'em all!

:thumbup: most of us think show-and-tell is the best part of guild meetings and love to see what others have done -- show them all!!

I love show and tell. It's my favorite part of a quilt meeting. Show them all. Go for it.

I agree Tartan, I love to see as many as possible. I would never think of it as "hogging" the guilds time, that's what we're all about!

I would first tell them that they were going for charity and then show them all. Maybe you will inspire some of the members to make a quilt for charity.

I would show all 4. I don't think you can show too many quilts at a guild meeting. I love seeing them all.

My guild doesn't have a limit and I love show and tell so the more the better. We only do show and tell at alternate meetings.

I would show them all, as everyone enjoys other quilts, and it inspires me, and helps with ideas.

If I had four quilts I wanted to show, I'd show them.. We are casual and enjoy seeing what others are doing. If I felt like that might be a bit much, then I'd ask some of my friends to help me my holding up three of them at the same time.. After I held the one I wanted to show most I would simply bundle it in my arms and say a word or two about the others being held.. I don't think anyone would think that was over the top. (and if they did, oh well, you can't please everyone every time!)

I go to a monthly meeting at our local quilt shop and we do show and tell first. That is where you get so many ideas. Not all of it is quilts. It can be anything that we have made in the last month.

I have taken up to 9 quilts at a time to share with my fellow guild members - sometimes I don't have any no one seems to mind.

Take them all and ask if they want to see all of them.

Show and tell is my absolute favorite part. Can't have too many.

I prefer one per person for quilts. sometimes we show two or three smaller projects. showing takes up a lot of time.

The guild I belong to was getting way out of hand; some people were showing 7-10 items each. So, what they decided to do is place all the charity quilts in the back of the meeting room; they were hung over a coat rack and you could see most of each one. They then designated the "show and tell" for other items with no limit on them. I find it much more enjoyable since they switched to this method. Too many of them were looking too much alike and the time for our speaker was being infringed on.
