Show Us Your Quilts Using Muslin!

I asked you darling QBers about using muslin as a backing in this thread and you provided such wonderful advice that I'm hoping you'll share photos of quilts using muslin on the back, as wholecloth and as background. Please share!

I have showed this one before. I completed it in 2011. The background is made from scraps of muslin and the little "butterflys" are small scraps left over from men's shirts, other quilts and doll clothes.

Bobbielinks, I love your quilt! It's so delicate and yet cheery. Those blocks must be tiny - so much work!

I made several comfort quilts using decorator fabric samples. I combined these with muslin, because the decorator fabric was quite heavy. Using muslin next to the decorator fabric gave me less bulky seams. Also I need something very neutral to combine all the different decorator fabrics.

If I EVER get around to making a Dear Jane quilt, I will probably use muslin for the background.

Gladys 02-16-2013 05:41 PM

Oh my goodness Dunster, I have some beautiful decorator fabrics that I've wanted to put in some kind of quilt for a long time. I love yours. My Grandmother and her mother made a lot of the quilts I've inherited from those. I love them. Yours is beautiful.

Was your muslin the bleached permanent pressed?

noahscats7 02-16-2013 06:12 PM

Dunster, I love the soft colors in your quilt. Love it.

Krystyna 02-16-2013 06:14 PM

They are magnificent! My eyes are opening to muslin in a new way!

Wendys Quilts 02-16-2013 06:25 PM

Very pretty!!! I will be following this thread. :)

DebraK 02-16-2013 06:35 PM

If I have a light color in a block..I use muslin..and for the backing also...Moda is what I use...

That is beautiful sak658!

Ruby the Quilter 02-16-2013 08:07 PM

My sister only uses muslin for the backing. She loves the look of the white backing - like our grandmothers used. I like either with or a print so my long arm quilting mistakes don't show!LOL.

Mostly muslin

This quilt has mostly muslin for setting together the 9 patch blocks and some really old stuff under the flower blocks. The old muslin is better then the new muslin but after it was washed I really liked it.

Krystyna 02-17-2013 06:01 AM

Grandma58, that is so beautiful -- and it looks so incredibly cozy.

alikat110 02-17-2013 07:21 AM

Those are beautiful quilts. Grandma 58, WOW!

Here you go, Krystyna! #1 is on my bed (I have a pair of those)..#2 all the natural color you see in these is unbleached muslin and all are backed with muslin, #3 is backed with unbleached muslin.

Bobbielinks 02-17-2013 08:30 AM

Wow! I am sure enjoying the pictures of all these beautiful quilts. Knowing that muslin is used in each one, I can feel the softness from here.

Here's mine. Posted before, my grandmother did the top years ago and I finished it. The back and binding are muslin.

One of the first quilts I ever made, when we were still using cardboard templates and cutting out each piece separately (ugh!). King size, handpieced and handquilted, for my middle daughter.

BOM using muslin from Joanns for the background

1 Attachment(s)
I wasn't sure if you wanted just backings or backgrounds, but here in a recently pieced BOM that I used muslin for the background. I didn't have enough beige regular fabric for the whole project, so I used some muslin that I bought as Joanns by the bolt. I liked how it all sewed together, and I am stippling (for the first time ) all the background. It is taking much longer than I anticipated so it has become a filler of time quilt :)

fayzer 02-17-2013 10:00 AM

I don't have a thing to show you but hopefully I will soon. You have given me great inspiration. These quilts are beautiful.

leaha 02-17-2013 10:23 AM

my avatar "dancing mugs" is ALL muslin, I hand dyed it, and used some white muslin for back ground, nice and soft

Krystyna 02-17-2013 11:26 AM

Oh my goodness! A fresh look at muslin! Sharon, I especially like the one with the birds!

patchsamkim 02-17-2013 12:23 PM

Not really a lover of muslin for backgrounds, backings...but see some wonderful quilts being shown here! Some so old-fashioned looking.
Tutt...I love the one that your grandmother made the top for, and you finished!

Thanks, Krystyna! I made 2 of those for twin beds...some of my first efforts. They are so soft. I really love muslin and had sort of drifted away from it...now after looking at these quilts I think I am going to "rethink" it some. I did use good muslin and I did wash it before I cut it because it tends to shrink some. Wish you would think of moving to Illinois..we could get into some real quilt fests!!! Honestly, I am not sure why anyone would move to this state...we are as poor as California! I came because the grandchildren are here and I really do love it...just wish the economy would improve and our local politicians would stop breaking the law.

barny 02-17-2013 03:29 PM

Oh, Daphne, your quilt is gorgeous. ALL of these quilts are gorgeous. I've got to get busy and get off this machine. LOL

Krystyna 02-17-2013 03:56 PM

Leaha, your dancing mugs is gorgeous!

Sharon, too cold in Illinois. Thinking of northern Georgia ... if we ever get to rebuild and sell. I'm told there are four seasons there but not too much of any of them. Need to see what towns have good fabric stores down there!

Here is a few of ones I did on muslin a few years ago. I use it a lot but like the older muslin better than some of the new muslin.

Both of these quilts are done with muslin. Bleached muslin on the blue and white, and a good quality muslin on the 9patch. Hope to get them quilted very soon

quilt queen 02-18-2013 04:38 AM

To everyone that posted pictures of their quilts of muslin, they are all just wonderful...I use muslin every chance I can and I agree with the older muslin being the one I would rather quilt with. Sometimes I get lucky and find old muslin at sales and thrift shops and grab it up very quickly...no matter what size the piece is. One day last week my treasure found was 4 yds...what a day!!

Krystyna 02-18-2013 04:54 AM

Twinkie and Whinny, I really love them all. Thank you for posting them!

cactusmomma 02-18-2013 04:56 AM

Twinkie, those are beautiful.

cactusmomma 02-18-2013 05:00 AM

Krystyna. Thank you so much for asking this question. I never thought of using muslin on quilts. I saw a quilt at the quilt show that I need some beige material for. I looked at all the fabric at JoAnn's yesterday but never thought of muslin. Definitely will be what I use. I'll be using muslin for a lot more of my quilts from now on. Thank you everyone for the beautiful inspiration. Everyone's work on here just continues to amaze me.

Krystyna 02-18-2013 05:35 AM

Cactusmomma, I never in a million years would have thought of using muslin on the front! I was wondering if it was frowned upon on the back! Just goes to show you what a VAST amount I need to learn about quilting -- and this is certainly the place to do it!

Wow, such BEAUTIFUL quilts!!

But Daphne, this one is STUNNING!!!!

Snooze2978 02-18-2013 06:40 AM

As to the use of muslin, has anyone used permapress muslin in their quilts? Reason I ask, I have a whole bolt of it and just wondered if I could use it for my quilts.

Thanks for any advice.
