Just a question, I was thinking about buying one, does anyone have any opinions on them? The one I am looking at is a 1956 model, with a little table and a stool.

Do they sew as well as the featherweight? Can you quilt on them without fear of the motor burning out? Are they a little stronger than the featherweight? Is it a straight stitch only machine?

It is a straight stitch machine, yes they sew extremely well. I have no idea if they are stronger than a featherweight, I would guess just as good. The old machines are just tanks!

I'm using my 99k to make Bow Tuck bags, in place of my featherweight which I use for piecing. The featherweight works for sewing the bags but I was worried because of the heavy work. The motor on the 99k seems about the same size as the FW. The bigger machine is heavier-built, seems sturdier. I don't know if the 99k is really stronger but if I do burn out the motor it will be easier to replace than my FW.

I read that you really shouldn't use Featherweights for quilting.
I don't know about the 99 though, sorry. I love old Singers!!! :D

Where did you hear that??? They are great for quilting.

I read it, either on the quilting board (machine shop) or the Singer website.
The motor is small for that kind of heavy use. I just don't want to take the chance with mine.

Do you mean piecing or quilting? Seems like piecing would be okay. At one quilt shop I went to, the woman owner told me ALL her quilts were made from start to finish on a FW. So what's up with that?

Well for one thing the bed is to short on this machine to do much FMQ for sure!!!

I know wha the will say.....why do you need another machine, but a girl can never have too many machines right? Esspecially Singers, the old black ones
