Does anyone have a stitch in the ditch foot? I'd like some opinions before I purchase one. Mail order returns are not my favorite thing to do. It looks like a good idea, but then so do a lot of unnecessary gadgets. Thank you.

amma 01-31-2011 09:23 AM

I tried it for SID and went back to my open toe applique foot or walking foot...
But I do use it for other techniques and love it :D:D:D

quilting cat 01-31-2011 09:23 AM

Wouldn't a zipper foot do the same thing? I have used one for SITD.

QBeth 01-31-2011 09:28 AM

Do you mean the 1/4" foot with the guide bar? I just bought one during a class on Saturday because I couldn't, for the life of me, sew that darn 1/4"!! The pattern called for too much precision so I couldn't get away with my usual "fudge it" seam. The new foot really helped.

salmonsweet 01-31-2011 09:33 AM

Didn't do much for me. I found it doesn't really guide the quilt (unlike a 1/4'' foot guides the fabric), I think the metal guide is simply meant as a help for eyeballing it...

I'm finding a walking foot much more useful for SID (and I was super skeptical about that one, would never have bought one but it came with my new machine!).

MaureenM 01-31-2011 09:37 AM

I love my SID foot. I also have a Pfaff,so I have a builtin walking foot that I use with it. Works great.

sewwhat85 01-31-2011 09:39 AM

it is personal unless you try it you wont know

irishrose 01-31-2011 10:48 AM

I don't have a walking foot for my Singer. I do have the 1/4" foot which was great for stitching that amount inside the stitching line. I could do the SITD on the Elna with her walking foot and do the FMQ on the Singer. The Elna's presser foot doesn't lend itself to SITD without a walking foot, so I can't use the SITD foot on her. I can get one for her locally, but have to order for the 301 because it's a slant needle machine.

Same here- love my SID foot for my Pfaff & use it all of the time!

feffertim 01-31-2011 03:16 PM

Love my sid for my viking, use it all the time, it clips on my walking foot and works great

jdiane318 01-31-2011 03:18 PM

I like my SITD foot, maybe because my machine is a Janome. It helps by patting down the batting and making the stitching easier. It could be used for about anything, it helps keep that straight line that we need.

Raggiemom 01-31-2011 03:40 PM

I have one for my Janome 6600 and I love it.

dove 01-31-2011 03:46 PM

I have one for my pfaff expressions 2 and love it.....makes it easier...

EasyPeezy 01-31-2011 04:14 PM

I love my SITD foot. Frankly I think it's a question of getting used to it
and finding the right "spot". I find if I go too fast I go in and out of the ditch
but if I slow down it works better. Also, taking breaks help. :-D

patricej 01-31-2011 04:41 PM

the SITD is one of those feet that quilters either love or don't.

for most of us, it takes practice to really get in the groove with it. (pun intended. )

do you know anybody who has one you can test drive?

featherweight 01-31-2011 04:53 PM

I have the SID attachments for all of my machines. I really like the way they make my seams look after stitching. I have a lot more precision when I use them. I wouldn't even try to do it without the attachment now that I have gotten used to using them.

Beffy_Boo 01-31-2011 04:54 PM

I really like my SITD foot. Because they can be pricey I checked ebay and found one to fit my machine at a very reasonable price. The seller has great prices on all sorts of things for quilters and wonderful customer service.

I have a question - Does stitch in the ditch mean you actually sew IN the seam or 1/4 on either side - and if it's on either side - which side do you use Left or Right or is it 1/4 inch on both sides???

newbee3 01-31-2011 05:24 PM

I have one yes it works but sometimes you need a walking foot even to do stitch in the ditch

irishrose 01-31-2011 06:10 PM

Tally Kathy, SITD is stitching exactly in the ditch on the seam. Done correctly, I like the looks of it. I want to mix it with FMQ on the quilt on the machines right now.

You sew right in the center of the seam. In other words , stitch in the ditch!!!

almostfree 01-31-2011 06:23 PM

I have a SITD foot for my Bernina, and I love it!

Blue Bell 01-31-2011 06:31 PM

I just got a PM telling me that a SITD foot and a walking foot were the same. Also that I should know what shank my machine has. No comment.

Blue Bell 01-31-2011 08:09 PM

The are 2 different feet.

I know. I own one and ordered the other tonight. My LQS was out of slant shank SITD feet, so I ordered one online. I'll let you know how it works.

Sandy-lou 01-31-2011 08:27 PM

Could someone please post a pic of an SID foot, I know not what one looks like. I usually use my walking foot for quilting or zipper foot for dressmaking.

You received some information that is incorrect. The SID foot and the walking foot are two entirely different feet.

This is what one type of SID foot looks like. This is for the snap on foot.

I use one on my Featherweight and I love it. SID is much harder to do using a free motion foot. SID makes for a much nicer line.

Sandy-lou 01-31-2011 08:48 PM

Thankyou Beth,
Both my machine have snap on feet. I recently bought a walking foot it cost 49 AU Dollars at Spotlight. They were 64 at LQS's.
This site has resonable prices.

mmonohon 01-31-2011 08:50 PM

My son bought me one for my birthday, I was amazed how well it worked. I use it for following lines too.

You are very welcome. Funny I picked the one that your machine took. Have a great day!!

And not to be confused with the 1/4 inch foot. The SID foot has the guide
about 1/4" from the right edge as you can see in the above pic. Usually
the 1/4 inch foot has the guide right on the edge but I've also seen some
that don't have any guide. You probably can google the model of your
machine and add SID foot and you will find which one fits yours.

irishrose 01-31-2011 10:35 PM

That site had some nice instructions. I am getting excited. This quilt has to be done right. Why I agreed to make one for a fundraising auction when I am a beginning quilter, I'll never know. Because it's a cause I feel strongly about, I guess.

I purchased the SITD foot for my Janome 6600 and find I don't even use it. I wasn't happy with the results and went back to using my open toe foot.

Sarah C 02-01-2011 04:04 AM

Dove, That is a beautiful quilt. :-D
