Size of hole in tree skirt

I am making a Christmas tree skirt for my son and daughter in law. They always have a huge tree and I don't know how big I should make the hole in the skirt. Any suggestions?

Is it a real tree or artificial? Artificial trees have a smaller rod and a 2-3 inch hole should be plenty. You could do a ruffle on the inside of the hole to fill in around the trunk if the the hole is too big?

It depends on whether you want to cover the stand or not. I would make it about 6 inches in diameter at least. Putting a ruffle around the hole is a good idea.

I use a sandwich plate as a template. You may want to graduate to a dinner plate though

I assume you want it to cover the stand. I would make the hole 4" that should be large enough for a large real tree.

You need the hole large enough that they can water the tree.

Thanks for the replies. It is a real tree; I was thinking dinner plate. I have no idea how to do the ruffle, so I guess that's not really an option.
