Snail's trail question
2 Attachment(s)
I want to make a quilt for a friend, a longtime basenji breeder.
The basenji breed has 4 colors the AKC recognizes, so I thought the "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" pattern would be perfect As a past basenji breeder, I have trouble looking at this objectively, so I'm posing the question here, to quilters: Is this snails trail block pattern believable as a basenji? I've included a picture of a basenji and it's curly tail but I will add that when they are very very relaxed, sleeping, it does uncurl (though knowing the temperament of the breed I doubt they would entangle them) I asked my husband and my son, telling them to be honest, and they said yep, they could be basenjis. Also, the pattern came with 16 different applique head patterns, and a couple are basenji like, so I really only need opinions on the tail |
I think it's perfect and your friend will love it!

I also think it is perfect!

I also think it is perfect - go for it

I think it's great...and to make it more personal, could you get an actual paw print from your friend's dog to use as your pattern for the corner paws?
|
That's a wonderful idea, but she's 4-5 states away, and this is going to be a surprise.
Long story, I'll share it when this quilt is finished. Thanks all, for the 'it looks perfects" My years of showing basenjis wouldn't let me look at this objectively |
Wow, that's really neat...you're so smart to think of this...she'll love it!!!!
|
That is a beautiful pattern, and I think your friend will love it! I think it's very clever to come up with this idea for Basenji's. Just beautiful.

Works for me.

Outstanding!
|
Yep. Great idea. Sounds just like the ticket to me!

As a former guardian of a Basenji mix, I think it's perfect. I'd say owner, but no one owned that little furgirl.

Can't wait to finish. Please post pics!

As a long time Pharaoh Hound breeder....who keeps looking for a Pharaoh Hound type pattern ( with no luck! ), I think the snail trail block perfectly mirrors the curl in a Basenji tail!! I do my rescue raffle quilts for my breed Nationals with fabric from my Egyptian fabric stash. I have looked at this pattern and thought, that does look a little like a Pharaoh but the many assorted Egytpian fabrics always win out! I am currently working on a quilt for the winner of the Trialathon and a small table mat for each entry. Have until Sept. when Pharaohs from across the country, and a few from overseas too, will meet at the new expo building at Purina Farms in St. Louis.

Before my accident I had donated quilt 'trophies' for our national, I think maybe I'll try that again. Since you mentioned Purina Farms: The year our national show was there the AKC, which has their museum in St Louis, was having a display of dog quilts, from any breed club that wanted to participate. Our club had nothing, so I said I'd make one to display there. The timing was such that the display was done the same week as our national, so we had a raffle at the national. People there bought tickets, I think for $1, and we drew the name of the person who won the quilt as part of some meeting. It raised (I think) $1200 for the club. I've learned so much about quilting since then, I'm a little embarrassed of the quilt I made. I received a really neat brochure with photos of all the quilts there. If I find it, I’ll share some on this board. |
great idea, looks good to me.
