I have never quilted but now I think I want to start with a king size (I know I am nuts) Snowball quilt. How do you know how much fabric to buy for your blocks? The center pieces and the corners?

Thanks so much and I love seeing all your beautiful work.

snowball quilts are fun and cool to do!!! i would use a TON of different fabrics in the centers ( i am a scrappy girl!!) and then use all the same solids in the corners....my favorite is BLACK. this gives the eye a place to rest when looking at all those great wonderful colors in the blocks....have fun!!

Yes but how much do I need of each fabric? I have scraps but how much for corners?

I am sure once I get one done, it won't be so scary.

what size are your snowball blocks going to be?

when i do a snowball, i use 6 1/2 inch squares for the center blocks and 2 1/2 squares of black for the corners. for a king size, i would ''guess'' a yard and a half for the corners and 166 6 1/2 inch squares of scraps for the centers. that is making a quilt 12 x 14 rows. then add borders to make it the size you want.

ps......i use a ton of novelity fabrics and then it becomes an eye spy quilt. or do a quilt with all flowers or all dogs and cats...just have fun

Here is a king sized snowball quilt that I did. Only the top is finished. It was a gift to my mother in law but she passed away before I was able to complete the quilt, but she did get to see the top after it was all finished and she really liked it.
I couldn't tell you how much fabric it took to make it. Because originally I bought 2 yards of fabric and ended up going back to get more, but for the main blocks, I am thinking it was probably 5 yards, but not too sure.

Those are the measurements I used on my snowball. I will have to make another one and use different fabrics like you did. That would be so cool. Thanks for the idea.
