I would like to do a couch/twin size throw using hand pieced hexagons. It gives me something to do in the evenings when DH wants to watch a movie. I have to do something with my hands, otherwise I end up snacking way too much! I was going to do "grandmother's flower garden" but DH does not like the pattern. LOL I tried looking for mosaic type designs, but am coming up empty. Anyone out there have ideas on a different design where I could still use the hexagons? I'm open to anything at the moment!
Thanks!!!
Lori

Okay....I worked these up on EQ and I don't have the blocks program so I had to improvise, please ignore the lines inside each block. These are more male colors as you said it was for your DH

Your hexagons are shaped a little different I think, but the design would still work out very similat to these

The first 2 and the last one have some subtle differences in the designs

The last 2

Hey thanks Amma! Those are great!. It's not technically for my DH, just for our couch in the family room.... but I don't want something in there they he will hate! LOL. I really like moroccan mosaics, but I don't think they lend themselves to hexagons very well.

BTW, we used to live in Olympia many years ago up by OHS and my kids went to Pioneer Elementary. We loved it there, just couldn't find good paying jobs, so off we went to North Carolina.

I have one more idea that I am working on too

I'm doing one, it will take me a few years.....

It's going to go through all the colours, I bought batik rolls that have every single colour in them.

It's a bit wrinkled, it's been put away for a few weeks. But you get the idea. :-)

Amma in EQ go to Quilts-One patch quilts- the hex design is there.

here is one I designed playing around:

I think I'd put the hex design on solid quilt blocks.

You can design your own pattern with hexagon grids. Either print it out like graph paper and color it, or save it to your hard drive and color it with your paint program. http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/tess/bighex.htm

OMG Blue, your hexquilt is gorgeous! At least what you have done so far. I can't wait for the finished product. WOW

Thank you! :-)

It's kind of like a colour-wash quilt I guess. I'm loving how it's turning out too. :-)

Wow!! That's exactly the look I'm after... but with solid colours instead of prints. That's a stunning quilt!

LoriJ 08-27-2009 06:21 PM

Cool Amma, I like them! That was something like I was thinking. Thanks!
Blue Chicken, yours is looking great. I love the color wash.

Amma, those are beautiful. When I finish my Grandmothers Flower Garden I want to use one of those patterns. Please tell me you don't mind.

I CAN ONLY DREAM OF MAKING SUCH AN AWESOME QUILT!
I am drawn to the floral, hand painted, water color look, and
hope that I can achieve this level of quilting in my lifetime.
Tell me that it is easier than it looks!

Actually, Susie, I'm using the quilt patis (plastic reusable templates) and it's really easy! I've done a couple just to see if it's something I can manage. I've got a design, several in fact.... I'll get them scanned and posted to see what you guys think. I've found 4 inch squares on Ebay that I'm going to use, so I don't have to cut up all those squares on my own.

About halfway down this tut shows them set in a diamond pattern that is pretty neat looking.

So I've found a pattern and also began drawing two others. I'm going to do the one with the piano key border first to get the hang of things. What 'cha think?

FUN FUN FUN site. :D :D :D

Thank you for posting it.

CindyBee 09-08-2009 01:31 PM

You could applique some flower pots or baskets and use the hexagons as the flowers.

A Trip Around The World pattern in your main decorating colors would look nice also.

bearisgray 09-08-2009 01:36 PM

Those designs sure are more fun and interesting than the old Grandmother's Flower Garden.
