Hi all, I have a black and white pic. of my grandson that I would like to duplicate it in fabric for a wall hanging. Only problem is I have no idea how to do it or where to start. I've been here on the board for hmmm bout a year now I guess. When I post pic's I don't usually get more than a few responses. I often wonder why because most post go on for pages and pages. But If anyone would be willing to help me figure out how to to this I would truly be greatful.

Cross fingers gonna try to post the pic. I can't figure out how to scan it and then get it here. I'm gonna work on it. The computer isn't reconizing my scanner. Any how If someone might want to take the task on helping me do fabric Art please please please let me know.

There are several ways/techniques to do this... are you wanting to tile, applique, do some thread painting? What are your thoughts/ideas? :D

You can take the photo to a copy place (Kinkos, Staples) or office place and they should be able to scan the photo for you. You will need a usb drive to save it on.
Or you can just have them enlarge it to the finished size you want, and trace your elements out from the copy.

Or just print the photos on fabric (which is really an easy process).
There is fabric already packaged and ready for printing available at Joann's. You just print out your scanned image and then treat it as fabric when incorporating into the larger quilt (sashings, borders,etc.).

If the issue is just getting the scanned image, anyone with a scanner can do it for you, or as mentioned above, copy shops will do it for a nominal fee.

But once the image is scanned, you can do anything with the file.

I once made a banner of a realic bulldog in felt on canvas for my son's basebase ball team that turned out pretty well. All I did was photocopy the image a handfull of times, then cut out the various layers and shaded colored areas to use as cutting patterns for the different felt shapes that I then cutout and re-layered onto the canvas and affixed the felt with glue. I would think you could do the same technique with double-sided iron-on interfacing between fabrics layered onto a base fabric. I've also seen landscape quilting techniques on tv where they use charchoal pencils and fabric paints to emblesh the more difficult textures. Careful selection of fabrics in similiar but different tones and designs would be necessary as well. For instance with your avatar I would use an underlayer of a gray/tan batik fabric cut into the outline shape of the cat. Then I would layer the white patches and black strips, and green eyes, & pink nose shapes on top. Then perhaps use charchoal and/or chalk pencils/crayons to smear on the whiskers and fuzzy center of the ears. Then I would use a black perma-marker to outline the eyes, nose, and mouth. I hope that helps to give you a starting point to envision how you would go about doing the wall hanging of your grandson.

First, as far as your messages getting little response - I too have had that experience, but try to remember there are thousands upon thousands of people on this site, and as new messages come in, they move to the top of the list, so often, others sort of get lost in the shuffle. Don't take it personally. If you don't get response, send another message.

Second, please excuse that below I am pointing to my quilts, but these are techinques I know and can offer as suggestions for what you want to do.

I see that someone directed you to my tutorial (http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-130238-1.htm)on making Fusible Stained Glass Portraits. That is one option.

Another option is to print a photo on fabric. There are packages at most fabric or quilt stores that you can just run the sheet through your printer, and it will print in color the photo you have chosen. Here is a link to that product at http://store.junetailor.com/store/p-...heetspack.aspx. One word of caution - make sure it is color fast! I did a project, and as soon as it got wet, it all disappeared! Uggh!!

Personally the best print on fabric option for ME, is cyanotype printing, that is how I did these quilts:

Also on page one of the last link is another option for making a portrait, it was my first try. It basically was a WHOLECLOTH quilt, and I did the portrait all in thread. It was alot easier than I thought it would be to make the pattern. The stitching was still a bit of a stretch for me, but very fun.

There are many other options, mainly depending on what computer programs you have available, or how comfortable you are with sort of freehanding things.

To give us an idea of what technique you want, please tell us some artists that use the style you want. For example: Maria Elkins, Marilyn Belford, etc, etc.

If you want an applique, there are several photo editing programs which will change the photo into a graphic that would be easy to then take different fabrics, and fuse/applique them to a background. Let us know what programs you have and maybe we can be better help.

Cindy - I took a class through Quilt University that showed me how to take a photograph and create a quilt out of it. It was fascinating. I started with my husbands picture for the class and have now done a couple of friends, my Mom and Dad and even my dogs.

Its all going to depend on how detailed you want to get.

I know I have all kinds of responses, some with none, a few or a lot. :) But, I post a lot of topics... so, maybe that is why I have a few with a lot of responses. I hope you dont think you are wanted or welcomed here, because that would be the farthest thing from the truth!

Okay, this is what I do. It is easier if you have a scanner/
printer. You can buy these already made up sheets of
material attached to paper, the size of typing paper and
put the picture under the scanner with the material
paper in the printer and press print. Or, you can make
your own material printing paper by cutting the material
of your choice the size of typing paper, spray baste the
paper and carefully add the material to it and do the
same things as previously mentioned. also you can
print from your computer program if you do not have
a scanner. I have done this both ways and it works.
Hope this is not confusing to you and it is what you needed.

Hi... I found this on You tube....it is for making quilt labels but I don't see why you couldn't use it for a photo....have no idea if it works or not....and you do have to be careful that the paper doesn't get stuck in the printer ....but maybe worth a go......Good luck with it.

wow I didn't know there were so many different tech. to do a quilt/wall hanging from a pic. Some one asked what it was I wanted. I wanted to recreat the pic in Fabric and possible some embrodery. I don't know anything about doing it in thread or string and I don't know any artist that do it. I only know I've seen it done here on the board. The scanning I wanted to do was so I could show you all here on the board the pic not scan it onto fabric although that would be an option that would make it like a memory quilt. My Idea was I wanted to make it a piece of Fabric Art using different shades and colors to accoplish it.
I've read through the tut. that were for the graduation pic and I don't understand how to get it accomplished. Your Tut is clear and great my brain just doesn't wrap around it.
At the moment my computer isn't reconsizing my scanner so i can scan it in to show you the pic. I hope maybe I answered some of your questions. I'm not new to quiltling but I am new to all the tech. aspects and correct terms. I basicly came up with an idea and went at it.

If you want to do applique, "Portraits for Fabric Lovers" by Marilyn Belford is a good place to start.
With her method, you will need access to some type of photo editing software. I believe Photoshop offers a free 30 day trial online to do your editing.
I use a different method than what she does, but I don't have my book published yet. I'm still writing it. :)

The June issue of "Quilting Arts" Magazine is an Art Quilt protrait issue. They have several articles regarding this type of quilt.
On page 54 they have an article called "Simple Protrait quilts" that uses black&white, along with a digitized photo of your subject. This may be what you are looking for.

I, too, was frightened by the thought of printing on faric. I bought 2 sets of the fabric on paper & put it away.
Then last week I needed a calligrapher to write on the almost beige that made up the sashing.
Well, there wasn't a single one in the house/neighborhood/or town. So I found a font & typed up the captions & ran the program & viola! - I had labels. I had to iron wonder-under light to the back.
A piece of cake!

A while back somebody on this board posted a link to the Victoria and Albert Museum. You upload your photo, answer a few simple questions and the program gives you a picture that is somewhat like cross stitch patterns but for quilts. A black and white photo would be especially good because it gets bogged down if there are to many colors.

Have you scanned anything before and had it come out? If you haven't scanned anything before, do you have the printer/scanner installed on the computer? If the software has been installed, I don't understand why it's not recognized. How about calling the place where you got the scanner and explain to them what's going on. Or, there may be a "help" line for your purchase. Hope you can get it straightened out.

You may have to put your disk that came with your scanner back into your hard drive, and try running it again, then the computer may tell you that you already have a version of the scanner on your computer and then you would have to delete the old information for the scanner and the disk would then put that information back into its' place. Sometimes my computer does that, somehow it just doesn't recognize the program anymore.

That is how it works on my system, and hopefully this will help you.

Hiya cindy ,,,,,if u look at my avatar it is taken from a black and white pic of my son , it is done fusing small pieces of fabric onto a fusible grid ,,,,I wouldnt recomend the programme i bought because it can have gremlins , but I could give you the choice of either you scanning the pic and sending to me and ill sort a pattern out for you , and tell you how to do it (easy)or ill do one for you ,,,,,,,pic I mean :) I wouldnt wish anything for it ,Ill just send it to you if you like :)

sorry to post again ,,,,,,the pic on my avatar is made with 24 colours ,,with 8 of 3 values dark med light ,,,,,you need very little fabric and you even use small patterns and uglies lol the process is like the victoria and albert museum one , but more detailed

Hi - I have done one wall hanging that was done from a picture postcard. I enlarged the picture on a copy machine to 8 1/2 x 11 and then copied it onto a transparency (a clear plastic sheet) From there I enlarged the pattern with a black sharpie pen onto a big piece of white butcher paper on an overhead projector. The pattern was easy to trace onto fabric. I used fusible webbing on the back of the fabric and cut and fit the fabric pieces together on a background like a puzzle. I'm sure there are easier techniques.
