Source for Hand Embroidery designs for Quilting?
 

I would like to do some hand embroidery for a quilt that I've been considering for a while, but I don't know of a good source for designs. I did a Google search and came up with some pre-printed blocks (on cotton/poly fabric :shock:) but I'm hoping to find a source for transfers or at least prints on a good quality fabric. Anyone have an suggestions?

I don't do machine embroidery but I found that by googling "machine embroidery designs" or even just "embroidery designs" many sites that have them will come up. Many of these designs can be adapted for handwork. You could also jump off those ideas and design your own.

You can click on a design to enlarge it,
then right click to "save picture as..." and designate where you want to save it...I often put it on my desktop. From there you can right click on the desktop icon for that design and open it in Microsoft Picture Editor.
From there you can enlarge it, crop it, etc. and save it again to the desktop so you can print it out.

OR you could do the legal thing and purchase the design!

I have seen them in Nancy's Notions catalog and in Herrschners catalog or Herrschners.com.

Crabapple Hill has some nice designs, Bunny Hill also. Google- Redwork, vintage embroidery, Mary Corbets Needle n Thread and you should be able to find some. Urban Threads has some interesting machine embroidery but you can also get the designs in hand embroidery. Jenny from Elefantz has very nice designs and also lots of freebies. Some places still carry the Martha's iron on designs and Jack Dempsey{ I think that's the right name} has designs printed on fabric. Check their website. Lots to choose from, have fun looking!

Believe it or not.... I found that free coloring pages on line makes for great hand embroidery designs. You can type in the "Type" of images you are looking for like flowers, Christmas, etc., Coloring books are a great cheap source too.
I trace them out on muslin and go grab my thread boxes to make my color selections. Nice thing is you can pick the pictures that appeal to your level. I'm currently working on a Santa Claus piece for a gift swap. Several people have gotten such pieces from me and LOVE them. And I can match the colors and patterns to their taste.

What type of patterns are you looking for? I do lots of hand embroidery. I have a set of all different types of baskets with different flowers in them. Please let me know what your looking for and if I have it, I would be happy to send it to you.

I was wondering what kind of images you were looking for too. I have a few that I have collected through the years too. Or should I confess and say a good sized bin and a binder full. LOL .. There are some cute free images at bad bird's site too. Here is a link to the site images ... Crabapple Hill and Googling coloring pages. A light box or any sunny window will help transfer design onto your fabric, and I like to use a .05 drafting marker to trace with. No, it doesn't wash out but I have never seen my marks after the thread has been embroidered on. Good Luck with your quilt I can't wait to see pictures :-)

Sorry ladies, I've been away from a keyboard almost since I posted this yesterday. I am looking for nautical type designs. The coloring pages sound like a good idea. I will check them out. :-)
