My husband bought me a Brother SE400 embroidery machine. It mentions using stabilizer but not what kind on what material.

Would someone be willing to discuss this with me? I want to embroider names on some stretchy tutu tops for my grand daughters.

I would use a cut away stabilizer on the bottom, and a washaway stabilizer (AquaMagic). Both of these should be available in the same section as the interfacings at fabric shops.

do not try to hoop stretchy fabric, it will distort the design. use a sticky stabilizer, just hoop the stabilizer and stick the fabric to it.

Most of us who emb. find what works for us by trial and error. I dont like the sticky stabilizer so I spray my tear away with Kk2000.Buy a few t shirts at Goodwill or use your old ones and practice on. I also suggest you try your design on scraps before you put it on something good.

For stretchy fabrics, I would use a medium-weight, cutaway stabilizer behind the design. There are several brands of fusible (iron-on) cutaway stabilizers that work well for knits. Inspira has a nice selection (second link) - my favorite is Inspira Stitch Point Cutaway.
