When you sew this block together with other blocks, wouldn't the tips of the stars get squared off?

I think you will find that the diagrams are not showing the block with seam allowances just a graphic of the finished block, there will be an extra 1/4" of fabric extending beyond the point for the seam in reality....well their should be if you remember not to trim it off, like I did when I first started

Thanks, I think I will try it with some scrap fabric before going to the real thing. This will be my first attempt at anything diagonal.

Just go slow, and use a scant 1/4" seam, and iron very carefully so you don't stretch the pieces...post a picture when you have finished :D

Once your block is sewn together, you should have 1/4 inch past the points on all four sides. That is your seam allowance for when you sew the blocks together. :)

And if your seams get a bit close, and a point is abit off, only look with one eye, you'll not notice it. Really most flaws are only visible to the maker lol

I did my practice block and it turned out pretty good. The points weren't exact, but very close.

But do you know that old saying "Measure twice, cut once?" I think it should be "Read twice, Measure twice, Cut once." I read it wrong and my squares were too small. The ones that I cut into quarters should have been 4 1/4 and I cut 4 1/2.

But all in all, it worked out.

Glad it worked out for you! Measuring is the most important thing, but I, too, have mis-read directions more than once! Also important is to use the same ruler all the way through the block and or quilt! They do vary, especially if they are older (read that worn). :?

Your signature says "another Sharon". My real name is Sharon too.

There were several Sharons on this board when I joined, so I am another Sharon! And I was born in Minnesota!
