I've searched the topics for starch, and lots of folks like to use it for piecing, especially if the pattern has a bias edge.

What's your opinion for starching applique pieces that have lots of bias edges? Is it hard to turn those edges, both convex and concave, if they have been starched? Does the starch help with fraying, or is that even a problem?

I'm new to applique, and am reading all about techniques before I start a project.

I often use starch or even wash away glue to prepare my applique pieces for hand sewing.

I starch generously. One warning - if you are using fusible, get the fusible ironed on first - some brands do not stick evenly to starched cloth.

I also like to use fray-check on edges that I think will fray.

For machine applique, I starch the background heavily. It keeps the stitches from distorting it.

I will hand applique. Will that make a difference?

My favorite starch is MaryEllen's Best Press Starch Alternative. I use the method from One Piece at a Time website. She has great tips. I usually use a blanket stitch but this will work for hand stitching too.

:thumbup: I did read that folks making perfect applique circles (lots of bias!) used washers for templates and then started the circles a lot to hold the shape during applique. That makes a lot of sense.
