Starching Flannels
 

I'm going to be working with flannels for the first time. I use sizing on cottons and batiks. Should I use sizing on flannels?

I always starch flannel when I work with it. Startching helps control the stretching and fraying.

Me too. If I'm putting it into my quilt top I starch it to control distorting my pieces and control fraying. Happy flannel quilting !

I use sizing on light colors and starch on everything else. I'm not patient enough to wait for the starch to dry most of the time and any scorching will really show on light fabrics. It seems that even when I do wait for the starch to "set"--my iron will decide to self-clean itself on light fabric. I need a new, non-steam, non-auto shut off iron! Anyway--I use both. It just depends on what color the fabric is and I always iron light fabric from the back side.

I've never starched flannel either. Thanks for the info. I always wash my quilts after they are finished, so I guess the starch would wash out and the flannel would be soft and comfy again after starching.

Always starch my flannels

Yup, I just finished 8 flannel quilts. I starched all the fabric, so the quilts were stiff, but easy enough to work with. I washed them, and they are now very soft.

Me too....flannel is too stretchy and the starch sure does help with cutting and fraying.
