Stitch for applique using fusible web?

I have done machine applique with fusible web in the past, but I have only used a satin stitch. I want to try a buttonhole stitch. Is the line of stitching on the edge of the applique or next to it? If the color of the thread matches the flower or leaf, then I think it would easier be to sew just on the very edge. I have no idea how to do this, so here I am asking for help. thank you. J

I sew very close to it like you suggest.

When I do buttonhole stitch applique, the line of stitching is very close to the edge of the applique, not on it.

Make a practice piece and try different things and different threads. See what you like and practice doing the points.

So it's needle on the cream background very close to the applique. Okay. I made a sample a few days ago. That's when I decided the satin stitch was putting down too much thread and changed the look of my flowers. I've tried the buttonhole stitch on two machines and I like the look better. Thank you for your responses.
