I am not too successful when trying to stitch in ditch using free motion. I generally use the horseshoe shaped foot but wondered if the plastic big foot would make it any easier. It might also make it better to do echo quilting. Thanks so much

when I stitch in the ditch I use my walking foot

I use my walking foot too. I find it goes better if I use the foot with the open toe for sewing in the ditch. I use the walking foot with the closed toe for sewing on binding.

I use the walking foot for straight lines in the ditch, & the free motion foot for curved or outline (and, of course echo, but that's a different topic, right?) ditch quilting. It is possible to use your free motion foot for ditch quilting, but more difficult to maintain straight lines and even stitches. If this is the foot you would prefer to use, maybe to avoid changing the foot real often, just practice & you'll get the hang of it.

Depending on the brand of your machine, you should inquire from your sw dealer and ask if they have a stitch in the ditch foot. I recently discovered my dealer (Pfaff) has this great foot that has a small metal quide in the middle of the opening of the foot and by keeping that quide in the ditch of the seam it sews a perfect line exactlly where I want it. Ask if ones available. You could be surprised.

I have a stitch in the ditch foot for my Viking, too. It works beautifully!

i also have a stitch in the ditch foot for my pfaff. it is wonderful.

I use my walking foot for stitch in the ditch unless I'm doing tight curves, then I do free motion.

I do not know how to quilt, if I do any at all its a stitch in the ditch. I don't use walking foot unless its a a thick one, then I do go to walking foot. I just sew with regular foot and regular stitch. I find I do not have problems with skipping or stitch length. It works for me. Just my two cents worth. And thats about all its worth unless you want change.
