I am rearranging my sewing room now that I have a new storage cupboard for my material.
The cutting rulers are always an issue. Give me some great ideas of where I might keep the rulers? |
In the closet in my sewing room I hung peg board. The peg board is about 3 ft by 6 ft. I hang rulers, scissors and a few other things in the space. I keep my rulers on my cutting table in a stand when using them for projects. Post pictures for us to see!

Mine are on a cheap pegboard.
This way you dont have to take off a dozen rulers to get to the one you want. Just wish I had made it larger. My specailty rulers are in a desk top letter holder on a shelf. It is under the hanging fabrics, kinda hard to see. By the way Im 72 yrs old and single so had to hang it myself. If I can do it anybody can. |
i have a cutting table in the center of the room. it is actually 2 dressers back to back with a laminate top. so on the ends of the dressers, i hang my cutting mats and rulers. those that didn't have holes in them... i drilled small holes. they hang on finishing nails.

Love the peg board idea... I just put some nails in the wall over where I use them and hang my rulers on the nails... hehehhe

For now my rulers are in an upright letter holder next to my cutting table. I've been considering nails in the wall ... though hate the clutter look, so for now have kept them in the letter holder. |
With my SMAll room there is no wall space for peg boards. I put a hanger on the back of the door with an "S" hook to hang the rulers. Yes, I always want the one in the back. At least I know where to find them. LOL

I did not have the extra sense (LOL) to buy pegboard...so I just hammered some nails in the wall and hung up my rulers, hoops and cutting board. It works great for me.

I've seen tips where people use one of those big metal rings for hanging belts in your closet. The big metal ring all has a hook at the top like a hanger.
|
I use the medal ring for hanging my rulers I don't often use. Then I have a slotted board on my cutting table for the rulers I use most often.
|
Mine are hanging on pegboard, behind my sewing table, making them safe, visible, and within easy reach.
|
I used small finishing nails and tapped them into the side of my storage cabinet. I have 6 nails for my rulers and my triangles. If the item doesn't have a hole, I use a zip lock bag and make a hole in the bag. This "wall" doesn't show, as it bunts up to a closet door near the corner of the room. I know where my rulers are, if I remember to put them back!!!!
|
I purchased two ruler racks, they are about 24 inches long, have slots in them to hold the rulers. They are side by side on my wall.

No sewing room, and no wallspace to hang anything, so I opted for an under bed storage container. Because of the size, I had plenty of room to keep all the smaller quilting notions in there also. If it is quilt related( not patterns) and I have it, I know just where to go look.
|
I just nailed big long nails in the wall and hung them up. I painted the nails a pretty color first. Looks nice and the rulers are out of my way and I can see at a glance what I have.
|
My set up is like this but I found a plate shelf at thrift store and had DH add more slots for my rulers... mounted it above my cutting table and voila!!!!!!!!!

My sewing room is very small, I love this idea, I am going to buy an over the door hanger and hang a peg board on it to hold my rulers on the outside of my closet door. I then can see them when the door is closed.
Great ideas here. One thing that I do is I hung a cook book holder over my sewing machine to hold patterns and sewing books. Right at eye level, I make fewer mistakes that way sewing pieces.

I have one of those rings and hate it! The ruler I want is always behind others and you have to take all off to get to it. I now have a small bin I stand them up in and it works alot better.
|
I have no extra wallspace or a cupboard, but I do have at the end of my table a space in which I placed a letter holder from WM. Works great.
|
I drilled holes on the side top of my cutting table just below the table level, put in nuts and long bolts. Now I have a place for my most frequently used rulers.
From one of the bolts hangs a fabric ruler holder. This was made with 3 pockets at different depths and each about 7" wide. So the rulers I absolutely use the most go in there. My specialty rulers hang on round belt hangers on the side of my bookcase int he studio. My really small rulers, the ones without holes are grouped by size and purpose in a drawer of my IKEA Antonius system. My Alto's QuiltCut2 lives under the TV armoir in the living room so it is handy to my cutting table. I have a somewhat small home and peg board would take precious space. The wooden slotted ruler holders take up valuable surface area. Works for me. ali |
All of mine are on the wall hanging from used machine needles. I put the needles in at an angle and they hold just about anything. No nail holes and it keeps the needles out of the landfill.

My husband just last week made this pegboard system for my rulers. Wish he had done it years ago.

Oops, double post

Alikat, what is IKEA Antonius system???
|
I have a wooden rack with slots smade for rulers. I have it next to a bookcase, on the floor. It's close enough to my sewing machine that if I need one while I'm sewing I don't have to get up.
|
I didn't like the ring - now use it for embroidery hoops
|
I have an old fashioned low dresser that I keep under my cutting table and all my rulers are in the top drawer.
It has several drawers to store all kinds of things and its very handy |

My hubby put a pipe along the ceiling across in the back of my cutting table and I hang up all my rulers.I also use a shoe organizer with lots of pockets and put all my scissors and rotary cutter in. So everything is out of the way.
|
Right now the rulers, cutting mat and rotary cutters are all on a bookshelf (36" wide). My sweet, sweet Hubby is framing a 4' x 4' peg board for me. I will hang it over my folding cutting table.
If I want a project done around the house, I just start it and "Mr. Man" will finish it. All I had to do was take him to Home Depot and ask his opinion! He does the rest! |
I use large S hooks and hang them in the closet. The rulers without holes I attach a bullnose clip then hang them on a rod also. Doesn't take much room and easy to see and get to them.
|
My son made me two of those wooden holders (piece of wood with slots across it, corners rounded, stained). You see them in the supply magazines. I love them.
|
I have one of those magazine rack things. It has three sections so all my rulers, plus a notebook, and a pad of graph paper all fit in it easily. It sits on a side table next to my cutting table. Works well for me.

hanging up on board

I cleaned up my quilt room recently and decided I didn't like the rulers on their sides method... takes up too much room! My solution turned out to be a sturdy cardboard box about 16" square and 2' tall and I put my vellum tablets, long rulers, shorter extra quilt hanging rods, quilt-line templates, etc., etc. in there. Even though it's pretty full, I can see what I want w/o digging.
My specialty rulers, along with small templates I've made are in my old dresser (so many of us have one!), my cutting boards are underneath the dresser along with huge chart papers (my sons engineering firm went for electronic only and I got a pack of their old paper!). |
I use 2 of the ruler racks that are about 18" long. They are on top of one of my lower bookcases where they are easy to get to and see. I forget how much I paid for them. I think about $20 each, but they solved my storage problem.

I went cheap, cheap, cheap...used nails in the wall!

i use the tie ring suzieQ
