Storing templates .... how do you store them???
Is there a best/better/preferred method of storing plastic rulers and templates??? I mean, do you stack them on top one another or store them vertically???? And is there some kind of unit to put these in???
I have a few rulers now and quite a few templates (they can be addicting!!) lol ..... and was wondering if there is a right/wrong way to keep them between uses. And all sizes ~ from some large triangle thingies to the smaller tumbler and apple core ones (which I can hardly wait to use!!); also a drunkard's path. thanks!!! jody |
I'm using an expandable folder for templates that are smaller and will fit, with a top tab identifying the template. The ones I'm using are a plastic material with snap lid and handle.

If you don't have extreme temperatures where you live, I don't think it matters. I like to hang my rulers. The three i use constantly, are on my cutting table.

I have the smaller rulers together in a padded mailing envelope standing vertically between counter and baking table. The longer & larger ones stand directly behind the envelope so they stay together. They've been there the better part of two years without a problem.

Glad to hear your solutions. I was wondering if they might warp or something if not stored/stacked properly.
So I think I'll have to have a look/see at JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby or even an office supply store and see what I can come up with. I am redoing a BR upstairs for my sewing room .... getting there ~ but it's taking awhile. And while I don't think we have *extreme* temps here in Michigan, I can say that our 105 yr. old house does get a little cold in winter :( Any other suggestions ~ would love to hear 'em!!! jody |
This blogger used T-pins stuck into the wall(you could also use those removable hooks) and binder clips. Scroll down to see a picture. http://quiltingonabudget.blogspot.co...uilt-room.html

I bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond a standing rack you store lids of cooking pots. I had it sitting on my table next to the machine and I asked DH to hang it on the wall and it has worked out great. It hold square ones and my rectangular ones I use everyday.
|
I hang the ones with holes on a pegboard, organized according to use. The others I have a spiral metal letter holder that holds 12 of them.
|
I use those circle paper holders that you get at the Office supply store -- I put the smaller rulers on one and the lesser used rulers on another. The ones I use frequently are on a standup rack. My templates are in one of those plastic project containers (15x15) that I get in the scrapbook area. I like the idea of the acordian file, but don't have a place for it.

If they have a hole in them, most rullers do, I hang them on my peg board, next to my cutting area. No hole's are kept in a heavy paper acordian file on a shelf above my cutting area.

i have an op shop toast rack [substanshal chrome+wood] for my most used rulers--the rest are in a muti pocket fabric holder hangs on the wall

I have pegboard behind my quilt room door - its 4' by 4' and has a ton of "S" hooks -- I hang up all the templates according to sizes and the extra cutting mats (smaller ones) hang at the very bottom. My rulers hang on hooks I affixed to the end of the cabinets - easy to get to and stored out of the way, as I didn't have enough room at the bottom of my peg board (and wanted easier access). My cabinets are our old kitchen cabinets, painted with new knobs, so I didn't mind putting some holes on the end to hang things. I could see someone using a lid rack on a counter and storing rulers there, too.

if there is no hole already, i drill a small nail hole and hang the rulers on the side of my cutting table. the smaller ones go in a drawer. my templates go in an oversized file folder.

for this christmas I got a wall rack to hold my rulers, templates, large and small - here is the website. It is made in Montana, I try to buy made in USA as much as I can and support the artisan/craftsman as much as I can. Money is tight, but this product is worth it!!!
www.clydes-workshop.com, it hangs over my sewing maching, and I love it. |
I use a letter/file holder from the office supply store for the big ones and keep those on my cutting table.
Small/specialty ones I keep in ziplock bags with their instructions and store in a clear/plastic drawers that I buy from Walmart. There are 3 drawers to a unit and they come in different sizes. Best time to buy is right after local colleges have started for the new school year. this is similar to what I have for my larger rulers: http://www.amazon.com/Fellowes-Deskt...ef=pd_sbs_op_2 |
I like to store mine on the wall so I can see them. All of one kind, like circle, I put together with a shower curtain hoop, and then I use the 3M Command hooks on the wall above my cutting table. I also have a square plastic basket sitting on my cutting table for the smaller templates, this basket also holdes my marking pens, fabric weights and giant pincushion.

Some GREAT ideas here. And nhweaver, I did check out Clyde's website .... those holders look like they would work great and very reasonably priced.
And I did *click* on everyone else's links too!!! Just in a bit of a hurry now (and Clyde's was the last one I looked at and remember the best!!!). Have to babysit my new grandbaby (our first) and have to leave in a few minutes. Any and all other ideas appreciated!!! thanks :) jody |
