Is there a trick to starting a spool of thread? I've messed around with a Mettler spool for over 1/2 hour now. Got so frustrated, tried to cut it to start it... now it's in the trash.

Does it have a pop up cap on the end of the spool?
I have bought a few that gave me fits too, the regular style ones :x |
oh no, did you buy it online or at a LQS, maybe the LQS can help you, might be a defective one

I've only bought this brand a couple of times before. Usually I can "see" the starter thread they have going round the top part. This one I couldn't, so I kept trying to "find" it. Yes, got it at my LQS. Teachable moment: have the LQS start the spool before I leave the store from now on. DH even tried to start it when he saw me getting frustrated surrounded by needles, pins and scissors... not a pretty -or safe- sight, I'm sure. :)

How frustrating. And thread isn't cheap. You are right. Have them start it next time.

Mettler is my favorite. It doesn't have the end of the thread hidden on the spool like most. It is usually very close to the center and just tucked under a few "winds" of the thread to keep it secure. The ones I buy have a clear celophane wrap that slips over the spool as well. |
Oh, I could just cry or laugh... I saw that thread, thought it was the end. Oh, it's so much fun learning things the hard way. ;)
