I'm ready to make a Sudoku quilt! I even finished a real Sudoku puzzle and am using that for my layout. What I haven't decided on - how big for the squares? I'm thinking lap size or so, and ideally I'd like to not have a lot of fabric waste. I know any size will work, but I want to know what you have done on yours. Thanks!

3 - 4 inch sewn (3.5 - 4.5 cut) squares with sashing of 1 - 1.5 inches

Wow, I was thinking a lot bigger than that. I'm so glad I asked! And your puppies in your avatar are adorable!

You can do them any size you want. Here's the math:
9 squares across + 2 sashing's between the 3 columns + borders.

Use charm squares (finish @ 4.5") and 1" sashing & inner border, your quilt is 44.5" plus the outer border(s).

Using 3 1/2" finished squares & 1" sashing/inner border, it is only 35.5" before the outer border(s).

Using 6" finished squares and same sashing/inner border scenario, it is 58" before any other border.

Thanks, you can make the blocks any size you want, the blocks are 9 patch with 9 blocks total.
Plus sashing, measure what size you want the finished then grab a calc to do the math ( I know I cheat and use a calc as I hate math)

That is so NOT cheating. It is using the tools we have available to make the best quilt we can. :P

I used 3 1/2" (cut) squares in mind.
They finished out at 3".

I made a sudoku quilt for my GS last summer -- wanted it to be a twin size, so I made rectangles of about 6.5 by 9 inches, with 1.5 inches separating the 9 patches and 2.5 as a first border, probably about 7.5 inch outer border. It turned out very striking -- it's at the LAQ scheduled for this week. I'll try to post a picture when I get it back! Good luck with it -- I really had fun with it!!

I agree with everyone else. Do whatever size you want to make the quilt size you want and you can always add borders.
