Sunburst quilting pattern
Will someone please tell me if I need a special ruler to mark the sunburst pattern for quilting? Thanks a lot for any help.

Need more information, hand quilting, machine quilting or long arm quilting? What kind of sunburst? Something as simple as an asterisk could be marked with painter's tape.

I find that I need a ruler to FMQ straight lines on my DSM. Check out www.freemotionquiltingadventures.blogspot.com on how to use a ruler with your DSM. If you are FMQ wavy lines, is it going to be one sunburst or many? You can stack layers of tissue paper and sew through them following your drawn sunburst pencil lines with a empty needle on your sewing machine. You can then pin the tissue pattern to the quilt for quilting and follow the perforations for the design. The tissue easily tears away after the stitching and you have no marks on the quilt surface. I am not sure of the design you are planning so that's all I can think if.

I used a ruler and a marker that disappears with water to mark mine just last week. Worked fine.

There appears to be more than one version of sunburst. Which one are you making.

Holice, it is a scallop in the corners of my quilt. I thought the sunburst would look good there. I thought the sunburst came to a point at the beginning and spread out at the end. Guess I don't know what I am asking. But thanks anyway.

It sounds to me like you just want to do radiating lines from a central point. So your scallop is essentally a 3/4 round circle. You want you lines to start where an element in your quilt (probably inside borders) make a 90 degree angle.
When I do radiating lines like that I use a protractor so I can space my lines evenly at certain degree intervals. I find 15 degrees work well. So line up the zero on your protractor with the point of the 90 degree angle and make a registration dot every 15 degrees. Then take any simple ruler and mark you lines. Quilt along your marked lines. You can pick up a protractor in any office supply store or even in the school supply section of Walmart. You shouldn't pay much more than a couple of dollars for it. You can get a full circle one or a half circle one. I have a full circle one like this: http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...rotractor-360/ Look at the 3/4 circle fans in the corner of this quilt. That is how marked the radiating lines in these fans in the outer border of this quilt, which is essentailly the same idea as your sunburst only you wouldn't do the curved tips just quilt your lines all the way to the quilts edge.
