T shirt type quilt made with jackets

My son wants me to make a memory quilt from 2 nascar child size jackets with lots of patches and just a couple of T shirts. I also am putting pictures of the little boy on the quilt as well. All the pictures are 7 inch square and of course the jacket pieces will be odd sizes. My question is since the jacket is naturally of heavier fabric, should I back the pictures and T shirt fabric with similar weight fabric as the jacket fabric? This will be a QAYG project with hopefully a light-weight backing. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hmm, well that is going to be a heavy quilt because patches are heavy. Since you are doing QAYG make a block and see how thick it is. If the jacket block is thick i would not use batting. I have to admi that you stumped me with this question. Please post pictures when you are done because I would really like to see it. This reminds me, crazy quilts use fabrics of different weight all the time on a foundation. That may be a way to go as well, foundation and backing but no batting.

i'm currently working on 3 different Tshirt quilts for Christmas gifts -- i backed all the tshirt parts to be used with a med weight fusible interfacing....it just made them a lot easier to work with (lost most of the stretchiness) - and since the tshirts themselves were all different weights of cotton and polyester (football jerseys) it unified them. i've liked the results - so have to vote for making the "parts" as similar in weight as possible.
