table runner and place mats
 

I need advise on a simple pattern for a table runner and place mats. It will have to be a very simple pattern because i don't have a lot of time left to sew it. this will be a christmas runner. Question 2. How do I work out how much fabric i need for the runner and 11 place mats?. Question 3 am i being mad to want to make a table runner and place mats when i still have 3 quilts to sandwich and quit before christmas ?

Wow, this is a lot of questions. 1) There are many free table runner and placemat designs on the internet. It's fun to search them out. 2) Just total the suggested fabrics amounts from the two patterns you chose and that should be about right. I'd round up rather than round down. Stash has never hurt any of us! 3) If you are working, it might be a squeeze. If you aren't than you should be able to get it all done. Just depends on how focused you are on the projects. Enjoy the process!!

Why only do 11 placemats? Make it an even number for future growth and make it seem like a set.

I would make 12 placemats instead of 11. Can always use an extra one along the way.


As for doing this project along with 3 sandwiches.... I would never be able to get it all done, but I know others who would have no trouble tackling this project. Takes real discipline and time management.... things I often don't practice.

if you have an embroidery machine I would embroidery the placemats instead of quilting them. It gives a much nicer holiday look IMHO. It is also faster. I am embroidering many, many for gifts, using flannel for lining, putting a holiday fabric for backing , not quilting needed, and using the serger with a rolled hem edge. They look very professional, are easy and fairly fast. With this procedure 12 placemats and a table runner could be done in a couple of days easy.

I just saw a really cute snowman placemat in the new Quilt Magazine. The face is a large version of a snowball block with applique. I don't need new placemats but I'm tempted to make a couple anyway. I also have way too much stuff to work on to even be entertaining this notion.
I think the french braid tablerunner that you quilt as you go would be quick and you could just do matching placemats out of one piece of the same fabrics?
