I am ready to put the binding on a wall hanging. Should I make tabs or put a sleeve on it before I bind it? Is there a tutorial for making a tab or sleeve?

Good Morning! I just typed hanging sleeve in the "search" tab above and several links came up for tabs and sleeves. Good Luck! I sure hope you will post pictures of your wallhanging for all of us to see!

I think it's a personal preference - you'll see the tabs when hung but not the sleeve. Both are ok with me, but depends on what it is and where it will hang and what it will hang on (rod, hooks, etc)

It is something you will need to decide.

I'm glad you posted this. I have two wall hangings I'm making and have the binding ready to put on. The one wall hanging I am making will have a sleeve as it will also be able to be used as a table runner. With the sleeve it is easy to just be in the back and not show if they use it as a table runner.
I also would like to see how others attach the sleeves so will be watching this post. The other thing you can to and I just now remembered it is do the triangles in the corners instead of a full sleeve or the tabs that will show! YEAH!!!! Now I know what I'm going to do with mine! With the triangles in the corners they can put a dowel rod into the triangles and hang it that way. QuiltingGrannie |
Over time, the triangle method can stretch out the hanging and distort it. All the weight is on the corners instead of evenly spread across the entire width of the piece as with a sleeve. Something to consider.

If you think you might put in a quilt show affix a sleeve.
Neither of my Guilds will hang anything that doesn't have a sleeve. |

WOW! I did the search....it will take me all day to get through all the posts but I am sure I will learn something!! Thanks for the idea

I've been making mine with the triangle corner slots on the back. It doesn't show from the front and you can slip a piece of wood like a paint stick in and hang it with regular picture hangers. Works like a charm..but I haven't used it on anything bigger than a wall hanging..I did see somewhere where someone used magnets to hang a quilt..thought that was pretty ingenious.

Tabs work great on small/light quilts. If there is much weight, the tabs don't allow it to be evenly distributed and you can end up with dips/distortion. :D:D:D

Thanks. I use the triangle method, but my wall hangings have been relatively small so far. The one I am working on now is about 36 inches square, so I won't use triangles.

I like tabs on a small, casual wall hanging -- sorta "country". If it is going in a show, it needs a sleeve.

Depends on how you plan to hang it. There are numerous options, depending on how you want to hang it. I've done sleeves, when I wanted it to hang flat against the wall with the hanger not showing, tabs when using a drapery rod, wanted it all to show and triangle corners when it was an odd shape, didn't want the hanger to show. Look at them and decide what you like for the quilt involved

AQS instructions for adding a sleeve:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_Vd82aSiAA I have also done it the way where you sew it into the binding, but I had a paper pattern to follow for that one. It's not really any easier than the AQS instructions & it adds more bulk to that part of the binding so I now just follow the AQS instructions for all my sleeves. |
I have a shop where I sell things I make. The problem with quilts is they are considered "bedding" and must carry a "do not remove under penalty of law" tag. To get around this I attach a sleeve to ALL my quilts. If they don't like it they can easily remove it.
