Well, I am on hold on son's black and white checked quilt due to running out of white flannel and they are out of stock at the store. I tried Hobby Lobby last night in a nearby town but the colors were off so now I wait. They should get it back in this week though. Anyway while I was at Hobby Lobby I got a few things to make a quilt for me and hubby. Got the dog, sister, and sons on the way so I figured it is time for me....lol. I got these 3 shades of green because I like green. So I was going to take some suggestions on what pattern to make it. I want to expand from the basic block but nothing real hard. I kind of was thinking about the Hayes Corner we just done. I think my BOM didn't turn out too bad. Does anyone else have different suggestions? The pic isn't the greatest but the colors are like a forest, lime, and a slight fushia green. Thought it was kind of crazy....lol.

P.S. Son was with me at the store and found this white with black polka dots fabric. He has now decided he wants that for the back of his checked quilt...lol Think it is going to look wild but I guess that is what is in style. Anything crazy.

Have you considered making a sampler with your greens? That would allow you to make all sorts of different blocks and practice different skills as you go. Using the quilter's cache web site you would never run out of choices for blocks!

One of my earliest quilts was made using the quilter's cache 'lover's knot' block. It turned out great! I made it in dark blue, yellow and white. Your greens would adapt nicely to that block too, I think.

The polka dot fabric doesn't sound wild to me; it sounds like a perfect back for the checkerboard quilt.

Yes a sampler would be great...........mccalls has a lot of single blocks too and they are all marked for beginner, med or advanced. just do the ones you like. :D :D :D :D

I hesitate to say this... but unless the colors are off in the photo, the three you chose are not great together... The dark goes with the grassy green and it goes with the aqua color but all three aren't wonderful together. Did you think of using a print in the quilt?

I hope I haven't offended you... like I said the colors in the picture might be off.

No, don't care for prints sometimes. These are colors hubby and I agreed on. The pic is off a little, there isn't an aqua it is mint green. The lady in the store thought they looked okay too. But I guess we all have different tastes or we would all do and want the same things. Didn't offend me, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

I agree with a sampler because you don't have time to get bored doing the same block over and over and there should be plenty to choose from that you can do with those 3 colors, and every block doesn't have to be different either, maybe just pick 4/5 that appeal to you and go for it. You don't have to keep it forever if you don't love it when you're done, put it in the closet for when company comes and you need extra covers or a pallet and start on another one. I'm working on a blue sampler ( a year already) for my bedroom and I'm going to make curtains to go with it. As much money and time as I've put into it I sure hope I love it!

I did a sampler quilt once with five different colors - prints - it was really pretty - like someone said - it was not boring cutting out and sewing all the same blocks - fun to find blocks to match too!! I'd go for a sampler with these three colors - OR a very simple block repeated...

Toni, here is the quilt pattern that used when I started quilting. It just involves strips being sewn together. It perfect for 3 colors( this quilt is all blues which is my favorite color), and goes together quickly. I have the pattern all written out, so let me know if you want it.

I think your son's idea of polka dot on the back is great.
