Talk to me about thread

What kind of thread do you use on your domestic machine? I have been using Coats and Clark all purpose or dual duty thread, but it seems to get tangled or break easily. Should I get a different kind? Thanks for your help!

coldquilter 12-30-2011 05:26 AM

I hate Coates and Clark - seems really bad and if it breaks easily, I always feel like it's not going the job in the quilt either. I usually use Gutermann. I have had a lot better luck with that. You can usually get it on sale at Joannes.

kathyz 12-30-2011 05:30 AM

I use Gutermann, Essentials (fron connecting threads), Star (from LQS). I like the cotton threads best, I find that polyster thread comes undone while piecing. Hope this helps. Others will most likely give you other brands that they like.

Sometimes it depends on what your machine likes. My Viking likes Aurifil, Wonderfil, Coats & Clark, Gutterman among others. It did not like the Connecting Threads brand. I haven't tried all of them on the Featherweight yet. I usually use Coats & Clark or Aurifil on it without any issues.

QuiltingKrazy 12-30-2011 05:38 AM

I like Essentials from Connecting Threads. I like Coats and Clark too! I have found when it seems to break easily, I change needles!

annthreecats 12-30-2011 05:43 AM

I use Coats and Clark for regular sewing and for my quilting I use Connecting Threads Cotton in my Bernina 1530. I don't have a problem with threak breaking.

Gutterman.Mettler,Aurifil. Wonderfil. King Tut, Molnlycke, Madeira are all in my stash. All are good to use.I also like Signature and am a bit disappointed that Madeira stopped making Tanne as I especially liked that one.

pinkberrykay 12-30-2011 05:58 AM

I use Gutterman, I tried CC and like you it kept breaking on me or created a lot of lint in my machine. I have yet to try CT thread.

Jackie Spencer 12-30-2011 06:08 AM

I use connecting threads, and right now its on sale. Good time to stock up!!

Ditto what pinkberrykay said.

I use Mettler Metrosene 50 wt for piecing.

With those problems the first thing I'd do would be to try another kind. Sometimes a machine does not like particular types of thread.

I just recently tried Aurifil. It seems pricey, but with it being so fine, you get a lot more mileage and it makes for such a nice finish on your work. I didn't think different thread could make such a difference. Now I know! And now I have a lot of other thread in my stash that I don't want to use, now that I've found Aurifil, though I will have to, to get it used up.

littlesurfer 12-30-2011 08:24 AM

I use Connecting Threads cotton thread and have never had a problem using it in any of my machines.

snipforfun 12-30-2011 08:28 AM

Superior totally! I normally just use white, off white, gray, and black. The cones last forever. If have need for another small amount of color I buy a small spool of Gutterman.

Mickey1 12-30-2011 10:24 AM

I use Aurifil and really like it.

polly13 12-30-2011 11:29 AM

When I bought my Bernina, they sent me home to practice awhile before taking my free lesson. When I went back the instructor said my Aurifil was an excellent choice as there is very little lint with it. I was told to definitely stay away from C & C.

Me too! My Janome 6600P loves the aurifil and it lasts a really long time. I've found that using aurifil has cut down my frustration immensley!

Buy one spool of each well known brand and you can compare which thread works best for you. I have at least one spool of every brand of thread and weight size there are. I use them all as one machine likes one brand over the other, one needle size likes one brand over the other, one works best for hand sewing, one works best for embroidery, machine quilting, decorative stitches and which brand will work best in the bobbin. Soon you can cull out the brands of thread that cause you trouble.

QuiltE 12-30-2011 01:51 PM

..... and instead of a fabric stash, you will soon have a thread stash! The good news is that it takes much less space! :)

BellaBoo ... great quote in your siggy!

i use cone thread, signature, maxifil, quilting, i just buy the biggest cones i can find and then use them on serger, sewing machine, and quilting machine...the cost is one factor, the color availability is another... and the flexibility... I buy 3 shades of gray, black, and white in 4 cone lots for the serger, BUT everything else is in 2 color lots, just for the needles on the serger.... if i am sewing something that matters, the colors go on the 2 needle places, and the appropriate gray goes on the last 2 places... colors for the sewing machine, colors for the quilting machine, grays are for general sewing and quilting on the serger... ps........when i buy whites, i DO buy 2 whites, palest cream and palest ecru....that way when using 4 whites, one of them will be just right for the 'seam needle' that shows... i just move it to the right place and all the other whites are moved to accommodate it...

babyboomerquilter 12-30-2011 02:17 PM

I like Madiera, gutterman and Threadart.coms thread. My machine seems to like it.

Becky Crafts 12-30-2011 02:39 PM

I like the essentials line. So far no breakage or raveling.

Mariposa 12-30-2011 02:42 PM

I like CT threads, Signature, also Mettler, King Tut, and Aurifil. I do not like Coats & Clark or Guttermann.
Perhaps some trial and error to find some that work for you~ :)

I can ditto all of that!! I loved the Aurifil compared to most others that I had tried so much that I splurged and bought the color card!

I still use some others: Gutterman, mettler (60wt in the bobbin is my fav), Superior King Tut, and a few others.

I don't like C&C - had the same breakage problem combined with way too much lint build up. Hated Connecting Threads Essential line - had 10 spools and sold them I disliked it so much - the lint was incredible!!

mamaw 12-30-2011 06:14 PM

I use Gutermann......Coats & Clarks is horrible as far as I am concerned. Poor quality and leaves lots of lint.
