Our guild has been approached to teach sewing/quilting to interested Girl Scouts of various ages. This is a first for us. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions? We are excited to be able to interest a new generation!

I would suggest using pre-cut squares and having them hand sew the seam allowance to make a pillow. Unless you have several machines to set up so that at least half of the girls can be sewing at a time, or they will loose interest. Wide variety of squares, since they can be picky! And have lots of fun! let them put on buttons or ribbon for "style" or have them bring their own extras to add.

Several years ago, the GA's at my best friend's Baptist Church and I made 20 quilts for soldiers in a San Antonio hospital. I gave them a history about quilting, especially as it related to the military. Then I sketched off some patterns...horses, flags, etc....and let them color them with crayolas and then showed them how to heat set them. We made enough blocks to have 20 quilts.

I then showed them how we used rotary cutters...bad move...no one got hurt thank goodness...but went through about 4 blades in one night. The next week we ripped the fabric...they had a great time doing that. Then they wrote letters to go with the quilts...about 5 letters a piece...

I have a quilting machine and I did the quilting, then took the quilts to my guild which in turn gave them to the hospital. It was a great learning process...for all involved.
