I use our guest bedroom as my sewing room which does not make for much room.

How do you have your sewing rooms set up to accomodate the most usage of a small space, send me pictures if you can.

I am so tempted to take the bed out but have no where to store it, once my daughter graduates college and moves out I can take over her room as the sewing room but that will be 1-2 years.

About 5 years ago my husband enclosed our one-car garage. We never parked the car in there anyway because it was always full of junk. Now 1/3 holds a weight machine and a chest freezer, while the other 2/3 is all mine! He custom built floor-to-ceiling cabinets on two sides, so I have lots of storage. Then he built a 6'x7' table with two sewing stations and drawers and cabinets underneath. I have an old wooden worktable that he got from a previous employer and someday I will refinish it for a cutting table. There are two nice windows, plus good lighting and even a ceiling fan. There's also satellite TV & a DVD player. If only the bathroom weren't at the other end of the house, I might never have to come out of there!

We have a large landing at the top of the stairs....it has a "linen closet" where my fabric goes, and I bought an old cherry drop-leaf dining table for my sewing table. When we bought our house I was DYING for a couch to go on "my landing" and I've only sat on it about 10 times since we bought it 3 years ago. I usually stack fabric on it. :oops:

So, I'm going to do some rearranging, move the couch downstairs, bring a wing chair upstairs, and put my quilting frame where the couch was. I do have a wall that can be a design wall, but I just haven't done it yet.

I store totes under the sewing table, but still...too much stuff under there.

Everyone here has seen My studio but I built a separate shop in my backyard just for my quilting...

These were taken right when I first got it put together on the inside. It has a larger wall unit with more machines and the thread rack is overflowing LOL!

I am going to be moving out to my property in middle TN this summer hopefully so then I will have a huge studio built in the basement!

But for now this is what I work out of.

I love my sewing room. I took it me over 6 years after my daughter left for college to decide it was mine! I guess I finally realized she wasn't going to move back home! (: It would have been a guest room, but having someone stay over is a rarity, so it gets much better use now.

We never have guests stay, all our family lives in the same town expect for a brother on both sides of the family. I may just break down and tear the bed apart and find a place to store the frame and mattresses until my daughter moves out. I really would like her room since she has two full closets that extend down the entire wall of her room. That would be great for storage of all my stuff.

I have a smallish bedroom for my sewing room. Since I first took a room for a sewing room this one is the smallest though. I even had to take the doors off to have enough room for everything in here! I also have my computer desk and a tv in here.

Can I come over ? what an amazing room!

We nearly made a murphy bed for the room, would have been behind my black design wall. However the hardware to make such a thing is so expensive that I decided to get a double height aero bed. The only time we had someone spend the night on it, she was amazed how comfortable it was. The best part, when she left, the bed air was pumped out and it rolls up into a pillowcase and stores inside one of the closets. (:

Just cleaned mine 2 days ago and not I can't find anything.

I have a 6 foot table with the Singer on one end, and the cutting mat on the other. The wall has pegboard and this is where I store scissors, rullers, etc. Directly over the table is a shelf with plastic boxes that have fabric. Next to the sewing machine is a metal shelf unit with more plastic boxes. This holds bobbins, templates, the scrap container and some other non-quilting items. The little ironing table is next to the 6ft one, and then there is the television. The room is not large, but I have the advantage of being in a group at church, and that is where I lay out, and pin my tops for quilting.

Is the bed a twin size and if so you can take the plastic tables from Walmart and put over the bed and use that space to stack things on for storage. Then if you need to use the bed just take the table down. Just an idea.

I did it in my spare bedroom, as the only one that comes and stay with us is my 9 year niece mabye once or twice a year.

Have fun organizing your sewing room.

Also buy the plastic storage boxes and they will slide under your bed, you be surprised how many you can put in that dead space.

I also took the closet in the spare bedroom, took the rod out and put stackable plastic storage boxes in there. I have a rack that has shelves that pulls out so makes it nice also. I can just close the sliding doors on the closet and out of site.

I got a wire rack from a hardware store that they were going to throw away. Wow, check out your stores as many times they have racks in the back and will just give them to you.

Nice spinning racks also.

My sewing room was oldest daughters bedroom. When she moved out because she was getting married, I took it over. I painted the walls a lovely butter cream yellow and accessorized with green plaid. Wedding canceled so she moved into the guest room. I have taken the doors off the closet and have shelving in there with bins. It was the perfect size until I got the long arm. It's a bit cramped now, but it's still my favorite room in the house. My daughters refer to it as "the black hole" because when I go in I lose all track of time. For Christmas my husband got me an IPod docking station with a really big clock, but I don't look at that, just enjoy having music in the room. If we ever move, it will have to be a house with a large rec room that I can have the long arm with full length bars.

I have a 30 x 40 building and just sold my long arm so now I have a big empty hole in the middle until I can get my hand quilting frames up.

Is it attached to your house? I envy such a large space.

I have seem many great sewing rooms on this board, but I have to tell you that my personal favorite is your "sewing studio". Your cutting table with those drawer fronts is to die for. And then there is your design wall and all your storage areas. Your room is truly beautifully designed..so well thought out. I love that you use that picture as your avatar. :-D :-D :-D

hi there everyone....my sewing room is also a craft/computor rm...:-(! i lived alone from 1997 until May of 2004,(I retired 12/31/2003)and my son and his 2 kids moved in with me(my decision). My house has 3, small, bdrms and no family rm or extra room. My son and his 5yr old son took the room i had my sewing/crafts in and my 3 yrs ol grandaughter bunked in with me. Now, she will be 9 and he will be 11 and i got everything piled into one small rm. I had bought my new Singer XL1000 in Feb 0f 2004 so it is in here too. I uncovered my quilt top, Grandmother's Flower Garden", my mom had mostly hand pieced(some machine)in the 1950's. She gave it to me before she passed away and now i am trying to get a border on it and send it to my cousin who does maching quilting as her business. I will try to attach a pic of it(if i know how). One of my sisters has learned to quilt and has made about 4 quilts in about 2 yrs. She never sewed much and has done this since mom passed. She does beautiful work too.(mom always thought I would be the one to make quilts.

When my DS graduated from college and moved to NYC, I took over his room for sewing. When he's home for a visit he stays in the den which has a TV and the sewing room does not. Last September my DD moved out and I've slowly been moving things into that room also. I do still have a bed in there for company.

What did you make your risers out of and where did you get them?

Walmart sells the risers. I have a 2 br house and living in FL, we have to have a guest room. So we got rid of the 2 twin beds in there and bought a trundle bed so 2 can sleep. Hubby made me a 2 part collapsible cutting table 24x36, so I can take that down if guests come. Bought a big white entertainment center at the Habitat store and have it filled with fabric, batting and cross stitch stuff. Have my mother's old vanity (looks like a low desk). Put blocks on it to raise it to desk height and use it for sewing machine. Lots of drawers and makes me feel good using something like that. I had a friend over who's just starting out quilting. She stood in the doorway and said "I think this is heaven." I love it in there.

get rid of the bed, get an air bed for the occasional company & put them in the living room....

that way they don't mess up your stuff!!

I am lucky to have just moved from a smaller bedroom to a larger bedroom (it used to be my daughter's room). I moved all my Ikea cabinets to the new room, and added some more. Relatively inexpensive way to get storage.

Is the table your sewing machine is in from Ikea also? I really like it and it looks like you have lots of room. Thanks, Sarah

I llove hearing about the rooms. I started out in a small 6x10 room , then when kisd left for good we changed one of the bedrooms into a sewing room. After several years and more machines but DH declared the room was too small, so now we are in the process of adding on to our house so I will have a 30x14 room. It should be done in about 6 weeks. And yes, he is a sweetheart BUT I will mention he is also getting a new shop! Hey, whatever works!

Take the bed out! I did. Still not as much room as I would like but a lot better than it was. The only person to miss the bed is the cat!

I had a beautiful sewing room in the last house we lived in. We moved in Nov and bought a very old historical house which we are rehabbing. Our living room is filled with drywall, studs, a table saw, and a table full of tools, so we are using a large bedroom as a "tv room" until the living room gets done. Then the "tv room" will become my sewing room. For now, I have my sewing machine set up in a corner with tv trays set up around it to hold projects and fabric and supplies. Everything else is packed away in the basement! Hubby says the living room will be done by the end of April so I hope I get a sewing room soon!!!

When our DD left for college her room became my sewing room.... DH left for a week on a fishing trip - I gutted the room, painted and called my DS to come help me install counter tops!

I started getting an itch to move my sewing room... DH is fine with it. So I am developing a plan on my computer. We will move the sewing room to the a spare room in the basement - move our bedroom to the sewing room - move the guest room to our bedroom and make the guest room into a toy room for our Grandchildren. You problably all think I'm nuts but everything will get a good cleaning and re-organization!

The whole move starts with new flooring in the sewing room to be... So for now I have been surfing the web looking a great sewing rooms and furniture.

I'm tired just thinking about it!

I discussed this with my husband today. He said he would support my idea of turning the spare room into another sewing area for me.

Now shall I knock out the wall?.......LOL

You can buy risers at the bed stores or walmart or dept stores especially around sept when college kids are going back to school. Mine were my DS's from college.

When you were talking about tables on your other thread, I sent you a pic of my tables that hubby built for me....
here are a few other pics of the shelving and thread saver he has made also.

I also put a folding door on the closet so as not to use up any room space when door is opened. In closet, I use sweater and shoe hanging shelves for fabric.
They really hold a lot..and one can purchase drawers for those shelves.
