Template mistake
 

I am working on my first quilt with templates. I cut out the templates and then cut out the fabric from them directly -without adding 1/4" around the shapes. So, since all the shapes consistently lack that 1/4" will the block still work and just be smaller than planned or should i scrap everyhing and start over?

If your templates didn't already have the 1/4 " seam allowance it would just make your blocks smaller is all.
I wouldn't scrap everything , I'd just go with what you have no biggie. :)

I would say yes. It is all about consistency no matter what size.

It will work out fine as you have cut it. Since the size will be smaller you could add sashings or border(s). However, too many borders or too large a border could be visually distracting.

Be brave and post a photo and the advice will be more suited to your problem. It's an easy mistake to make and most of us have done the same or equivalent. Good luck.

most templates have the seam allowence added but even if they don't as long as they are all cut the same your quilt will go together fine you can just make a few more if you need your quilt bigger if you don't have more of the fabric just add a border it will work out fine don't scrap anything.good luck

It depends on what block it is. If it's a 9-patch, for instance, where every piece is the same size to begin with, you'll just have a smaller block. If it's something more complicated, you may have to cut some pieces over again. To take just a simple example, let's say you are doing a 4-patch that should finish at 12". It consists of two squares cut 6.5" (finish at 6") alternating with four patches. The four patch squares should be cut at 3.5".

Instead, though, you have two squares cut 6", which will now finish at 5.5". You four patch squares were cut 3", so they will now finish at 2.5" each, resulting in a square that's 5" finished. That won't match up with your other two squares, so you'll have to cut them smaller.

I'd suggest making one block from the patches you have cut and see how it goes together. Then you'll know for sure whether it's going to work or not.
