Tension Problems
 

I have a Juki TL98Q on a frame. I've never had tension problems with it until this quilt. I have put a new needle, have cleaned & oiled the machine, & have tried different bobbins, but the bottom thread is loose. Sort of like _n_n_n. It is very easy to rip out with just a slight tug. The top thread looks normal. The only thing different is the batting. I was given some batting that is very thin. Can batting cause tension problems?

Yes, batting will indeed cause tension problems. If you are using a thin batting you may want to loosen the quilt on the frame. Make sure the back of the quilt is making contact with the bed of the machine. You may need to tighten the bobbin thread just a bit to accomodate for the thin batt. You may even want to go down one or two sizes in your needle.

if your loops are on the bottom it means your top tension is too loose- you may need to tighten it a bit to make up for the different materials. adjust it just a little at a time- like a 1/4 turn- test- then tighten a little more until you have the top & bottom even--if the top stitching was not right it would mean the bobbin tension needs to be adjusted-but it sounds as if this is not the case-

Tighten my tension a little bit more & I made sure that my needle was up when I re-threaded it. Whoo-hoo...I'm back to quilting. Thank you for your help!
