I was privileged to quilt at the Colorado Fall Retreat with some incredibly talented women who attend the Mennonite Churches in Colorado. Fabulous sense of community, and very gifted artists with generous hearts to teach about 5 newcomer quilters. It wasn't pricey to attend, and I have never enjoyed 4 days of quilting more than this. We were served two excellent meals a day, with tons of snack foods, and paid only $25 per night for lodging ---- but we sewed till very late every night, and started very early every morning, so lodging wasn't really something we noticed!
Have any of you quilted with other Mennonite Quilt groups, or Amish groups? What did you think? |
wow sounds wonderful how did you find out about this
|
oh it sounds really wonderful! So glad you had a grand time
|
Around Westcliffe Colorado,I'm seeing more and more of the groups.

Not a group, but the friend who got me started quilting grew up in a Mennonite community. She told some wonderful stories about quilting traditions in her youth.

That sounds wonderful! Our Mennonite community doesn't really associate much with outsiders, but it would be fun!

Our mennonite community here have construction companies and such, but the women you don't see very often either. They have many things I would love to learn from them if I had the chance...I am very much a self sufficiency buff as well, so they would be a wealth of knowledge to me in more ways than one!
I grew up in a church that is very closely related to them, (Plymouth Brethren) and my father was a preahcer, so I really don't think I'd have a hard time fitting in to most degrees...:) In fact I would love it! |
Sounds like you all had a good time. I think it would be fun!

I absolutely love our Mennonite people. They donate blood regularly, and when we go to their meeting halls they usually have a quilt that they are working on. I wondered about the lack of the quilts during the summer but one sweet lady informed me firmly that in summer the kids were out of school and needed Moms at home.
Loved that response and can understand it. They do exquisite work on their hand quilting frames, I'm always the first to go over and admire it! |
