hi. i'm a grand quilter newby. i can quilt for a while, then the thread breaks, repeatedly. very frustrating. any ideas? candy

Is it a thicker, quilting thread, ie a 40 wt or thicker? If so, are you using a bigger needle? Either an 80/12 or even a 90/14 for a really thick thread. A thick thread through a smaller needle will wear through and break.

Yes try a bigger needle. I was free motioning the other day and my thread kept breaking -- new bigger needle and no more problems. Let us know if it works!

also, my mom told me that if your needle has been used alot, the needle will get little burs on it from your thread sliding next to it so much, that will snap your thread as your sewing.... hopefully that made since.

Same problem I had and I switched to a bigger needle and slowed down a bit and all was fine.

One problem I've discovered when my thread breaks repeatedly it is usually because I've had a 'lead foot' and tried to go too fast and then when I stop the thread goes back around the spool spindle, which of course causes the thread to break shortly after you start the next seam.

There are many reasons why thread breaks. Check with your manufacturer and see what advise they can give you for your particular machine. It may be a simple setting.
