i'm in the middle of a quilt that has no background color. it is a giant mish-mosh. think: every color and print imaginable.

i will longarm this and i'm not good enough to stitch in the ditch, so the stitching will show somewhere but not everywhere. there are very, very lights and very, very darks. both solids and prints. straight lines and curves.

there is too much going on to keep changing color threads. i won't live that long. any ideas? all help gratefully appreciated.

i would go for a variegated that will blend in most of the time since it changes color every inch or so.

I would use ecru it's my favorite go to color.

BW, use a clear thread. .004. Or a smoky. Won't be any problem with wear or washing. Use a 14 needle.

What I have found that works for me is taking out several colors of thread and laying them out on the quilt. The one that disappears the best is the one I go for. I once did a quilt that had red, brown and whites and the thread that matched it the best was an olive green! Crazy, but I tell you, it looked amazing.

I hope that helps.

I'd go with a variegated thread like Klue suggested.

I would take the quilt to the store with you, and start laying out different threads onto the front and back...it's amazing what disappears and stands out.

I used variegated on my bargello quilt and that has lots of colors. I love the way it looks.
