Can I use serger thread for machine quilting thread?

I have read that other quilters on this board have done this.

I wouldn't. Serger thread is meant to be used with 3 to 5 strands per seam.

my friend used some serger thread and it kept breaking during the quilting. not as strong as regular thread.
