I'm a newbie to quilting. what type of thread is highly recommended for sewing quilts? I just purchased a new maching and paid quite a bit for it and they say "Don't use cheap WalMart thread". We don't have a JoAnns or Hobby Lobby so I'll have to order it online. Any suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I use machine quilting thread by Coats and Clark...I even use their regular thread in the machine if I can't find the color I need under machine quilting...works just fine and I have a Husqvarna SE...

I like Aurifil 50wt for both piecing and quilting. Virtually no lint. A lot of people like King Tut for quilting (a 40wt thread) but it's about twice as expensive as Aurifil.

Tristanthreads.ca has got Aurifil on clearance now, fab prices, reasonable shipping. Candace from Elk Grove, CA of this board told us all about it in another thread about thread. I just ordered and LOVE the thread and the deal. Tell them Candace referred you, b/c I'm just passing her tip along. I use 50 wt to piece and I think experienced FMQ-ers use 12, 28, or 40 wt to quilt. I also hear folks praise Connecting Threads and Superior Threads. I like their Masterpiece for piecing.

I love Connecting Threads thread. You can order online at connectingthreads.com. They have great prices on fabric also. I got their batiks for Christmas and it is very nice.

Gutterman and Sulky. My Janome dealer told me not to use Coats & Clark. The thread weight is inconsistent and can ruin the tension.
