I have just finished putting together a scrappy top using flannel scraps. I am wondering do I tie it or do machine quilting. It is a quilt that will go to a charity auction. Any ideas?

I think tied quilts look pretty nice. I tie some utility quilts every two inches, that really gives them the extra something that simple machine quilting doesn't.

Have you tied a quilt before? I haven't, but keep thinking I will try it. The ones I have seen look really neat and remind me of the old flannel tied quilts on my grandmother's and great aunt's beds. If you tie it would you post it? I would love to see it.

I like to tie flannel, denim, corduroy, some scrappy quilts and couch throws. There's just something about tying them that makes them look warmer. I use one strand of 3 ply acrylic yarn knotted three times and then trimmed to about 3/4-1".

Yes, I have tied alot of quilts. My church group, about 5 of us sew and tie about 18 quilts a year for the homeless shelters. We use darning thread as it is easier to thread into needles and seems to wear better than yarn.

I would tie it. I have tied several quilts and I use embroidery floss.

Do you remember when the meat cutter at the grocery store would cut meat and send it home wrapped in paper and tied with string? My grandma used to save that and use it to tie quilts. I've got one that has "meat string" ties. Love it and it's lasted for almost 40 hard years.
