Used to buy fat quarters because I liked the pattern, color, print etc. Now I have waaay too many. What would you make with them since they don't really go together. I guess I could sort them some way but would you make scrappy quilts or buy something that matches several and find a pattern. If so, what pattern would you use?
Thanks for your opinions. |
Scrap quilts but than I love scrap quilts. Go to quiltville.com and look at all her beautiful work and get inspired.

I took fat quarters and made a scrappy disappearing 9 patch
was so much fun! |
Sorry you must have mis typed ! How CAN you have TOO MANY FQ's, just take them out of their store once in a while which is what I did yesterday when it was rainy and miserable and just cheered myself up by sorting and handling them, Its cheaper than any therapy I know, insulates your house , does not depreciate and can ultimately be used to construct something beautiful.....however if you really don't want them... I could help!! LOL

Thanks for your opinions. There are many patterns out there that are designed for FQs only. Some end up just as scrappy mish-mash designs ... and some are quite lovely patterns that you'd wonder how it was only FQs. And too, there are countless possibilities if you start looking at sampler quilts. Cruise around and find some patterns that intrigue you. And go for it! |
you can use them for purses

Thanks for your opinions. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-138138-1.htm And, of course, scrappy strip quilts are always great. |
You could do some tube quilt patterns ... they call for WOF but something like my avatar quilt, it doesn't matter if it is WOF or just part of the width! And too, you could strip the FQ, join them back up to make the WOF.
|
Look at them for high contrast, like light/dark, yellow/navy. go from there
|
I understand exactly what you mean. When I first was buying them when I'd hit a sale, I'd just buy what caught my eye and not paying attention to what went together. So I was in the same boat.
What I did was cut them all up into squares and strips and made scrappy quilts. I still have a few that I really like but can't figure out what it goes with so, I just decorate with them.. a nice basket with pretty fat quarters is very pretty. |
I have the same problem. What I did is sort them so they go together. I have 1930, civil war, primary colors, kids prints, home decor, batik, etc. I make quilts and then add a border and or back by buying more fabric if need be. also at times I skip borders and just make the blocks go to the edge and then bind. FQ are great for scrappy quilts. If you can not make them work maybe offer to trade on the board and get some FQ or yardage of what you need.

Great! Next you are going to tell me that there will never be a chance of being too skinny or too rich. I understand that the chances are so slim as to be impossible, but there is a bigger chance of these happening than of having too many fat quarters.
|
I would (and have) cut them up into various sizes for scrap quilts.
|
I'm hooked on Eleanor Burns' Quick Quarter quilts. The queen size takes 26 different fat quarters. And it's quick and easy to make. I never was much of a fat quarter buyer till I got that book. It's called Quick Trip Quilts.
Here's the quilt I made. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-101781-1.htm |
I have books from the library that use jelly rolls. There's no reason you can't cut the FQs in 2 1/2" strips. Most of the patterns cut up the strips, anyhow.
Kimberly Einma: Jelly Roll Quilts and More Pam and Nickt Lintott: Two More From One Jelly Roll Quilts M"Liss Rae Hawley: Fat Quarter Quilts (I really like this one.) |
Lucky Stars, by Atkinson Designs (my avatar). If you use a muslin or light background it will tie them together. You could use a mix and match of all your colors, or pick a specific color scheme. It takes 1 FQ plus background fabric for each block. Then you mix and match the centers/points/surrounding blocks. It's a very easy pattern to do. The background extends beyond the points and is squared before you put the borders on. No cut off points!

Turning twenty quilt pattern comes to mind
|
Go scrappy.
|
 I would hate to have this problem!

How about a Yellow Brick Road? Turning Twenty? There are also lots of freebies out there~ Hope you find something to your liking!
|
OK QUILTERS - I hear you!
Mea culpa! Mea "maxima" culpa!! I guess I should have phrased it "too many fat quarters that don't match". I understand you can never have too much fabric in any size or yardage. Thanks for all your input. Now I can start figuring out what to do. |
If you at a loss, bundle some together by color, or that may blend together, and sell some bundles on this board!! If they are good prices, they will fly out!! Then you can take your riches from the sale and buy more!!!
|
I understand - gave most of my older FQ's away the first of the. Unfortunately I love fabric/FQ and am finding myself collecting them again. A little more picky this time.
|
Just how many is waaay too many?
I gave up counting mine. But I would never consider getting rid of them. Used FQ in my avatar quilt and cut up the leftovers for scrappy quilts. |
I know what you mean buying too many fat quarters. I bought a LOT of green fat quarters and quarter yards for the scrappyish Winding Ways quilt I'm making for my boyfriend. I wanted some variety so I kept buying stuff I thought looked good or added contrast to another fabric. Then, while still buying fabric, I thought about putting in a border...that's when it hit me I probably had enough fabric for the blocks plus a scrappy pieced border. And then possibly then some.
|
A "SUDOKU" quilt would be neat.
And exactly how many is tooo many? I can PM you my address.  Just kidding! |
time to start GIFTING them....join our monthly Secret Swaps!
|
I just made a "jigsaw puzzle" scrap quilt with tons of FQ sized leftover pieces. I got a free pattern on-line and it was fun and easy to make.

Thanks for your opinions. Second of all -- scappy is great! M'Liss Rae Hawley has a few fat quarter books which have patterns specifically for fat quarters, with 1 fabric to tie it together -- usually in a boarder. Good Luck! |
I have 12 shoeboxes of fat quarters. I use them for accents (something to make a block POP), applique and once or twice have used them for scrappy binding.
|
Goodness! Send them to ME, of course!! ;-)
