I went to a lecture and they said to be a good quilter you need to have patience, good knowledge of geometry and a precise nature. Do you think that is true?

Jan in VA 10-25-2011 10:38 PM

Not really. :D

Pppppfffftttt. Sounds like the lecturer might have been undercover Quilt Police.

carolaug 10-25-2011 10:54 PM

no...

fabric_fancy 10-25-2011 10:56 PM

no but it sure does help.

Sadiemae 10-25-2011 11:03 PM

Who knows...but I hated Geometry in HS.

sewbeadit 10-25-2011 11:26 PM

I am out then!

And to be a BAAAD quilter, you needs tattoos, attitude, and a good knowledge of hard liquor! I'm in!!!

Annaquilts 10-25-2011 11:49 PM

It might help but I think if you are more relaxed you might be able to make wonky quilts and those are so darn cute. Well I got the geometry and precise nature but what is patience?

annesthreads 10-25-2011 11:53 PM

Oh well, I'd better give up then.....

emykay 10-26-2011 12:01 AM

Well, if that's true then I better give up now! I think that to quilt, you just have to enjoy it!

Coreyquilter 10-26-2011 12:12 AM

Your comments are all funny, but truly, you are a good quilter when you enjoy the process, we quilt because we love it.

emsgranny 10-26-2011 12:20 AM

Hope you didnt pay too much for that lecture lol He would surely scare alot of people off!!! I am patient (most of the time) my geometry sucks and I am picky most of the time and very critical of my own work. I will keep trying though just to prove him wrong lol

Patience - sometimes, but the language can be terrible, and it's not unknown for a project to take flight across the room when it's defied me once too often

Geometry: ha! Scraped through my maths exams, forgot it all years ago - more important things to store in my brain

Precise: ROFL is all I can say to that.

Apologies for double post - don't know why that happened.

Becky Crafts 10-26-2011 12:49 AM

My math skills are minimal, my patience..well, lets say the cancer meds have me cranked up, and precision? HA!! I do my best, I love the process and the challenge and the recipients fight over the rest. I guess I do ok! :-)

mimom 10-26-2011 02:05 AM

I know a quilter who strives to be technically perfect. She has been quilting for 20 years and I am currently making quilt #41 for her daughter, she's tired of waiting for her mother to make her one. I make my quilts to be functional not perfect.

Mitch's mom 10-26-2011 02:15 AM

I have never claimed, nor will I ever claim to be, a good quilter! I'm not so sure what I do to fabric and batting is even legal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, however, my family is very happy to 'snuggle' my quilts across state lines.

I think a better trait for a quilter would be Persistence.

Ditto.

QuiltnNan 10-26-2011 02:42 AM

i think those are good qualities to have, but not absolutely necessary

Patience - does help
Good knowledge of geometry? We all get by
Precise nature - in some cases, but
we also have to have _
1)the ability to accept things the way they are and will be
2) ability to know where to go to get help and advise for things we don't know or understand
3) a creative nature and know that in being creative we are not always precise ---- thus it is becomes art
and ....
4) a quilter's brain

Was the lecture really a comedy routine?

Moonglow 10-26-2011 02:50 AM

I think you need some imagination and a sense of humour. It should be enjoyable otherwise what's the point?

handstitched 10-26-2011 02:55 AM

I think to be a good quilter, you have to love what you do,

dd55 10-26-2011 03:00 AM

ditto

gypsyquilter 10-26-2011 03:00 AM

I'd say its more patience, a willingness to try new things, the ability to laugh at yourself and not take things too seriously when a fabric or thread decides to exercise its own will versus submit to yours :-)

Murphy 10-26-2011 03:03 AM

Not!

OMG.

Add me to the BAAAAAD quilters club!

handstitched 10-26-2011 03:09 AM

I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THIS ON A SHIRT

deedum 10-26-2011 03:10 AM

Gee, if I believe that, then I might as well close the door on my play room and never look back. That would just take all the fun out of everything!

Luckily, I always like to think for myself and don't believe everything I hear :)

Tinabodina 10-26-2011 03:13 AM

I must be the worst, because I have none of those. Where was this show anyway?

mandyk 10-26-2011 04:34 AM

Rainy Day, you are hysterical!

MostlyMaja 10-26-2011 04:46 AM

Most quilts are not in the geometry but in the following of a pattern where the geometry is already done. And I agree with persistance. Quilting is like they say about writers--just make yourself get started every day and the quilt will follow.

PaperPrincess 10-26-2011 04:51 AM

What about fabric addiction?

LisaGibbs 10-26-2011 05:40 AM

I was told in the 4th grade I would probably never be able to grasp the concept of geometric shapes and putting them together. I think we can do what we want to do--except math which takes a certain brain function I don't seem to have a complete grasp of--

I would alter the second one slightly to being able to tell when the geometry is clearly "off", but not necessarily knowing why...just that it's wrong. There are unlimited tools these days that can help with the math and geometry of quilting if it's just not your forté. As for patience and a precise nature, I agree completely. All three can be learned...even self-taught...quite easily.

vjengels 10-26-2011 05:45 AM

Really????... I thought you only needed to love fabric. I only took remedial math in school, the details tend to bore me

noveltyjunkie 10-26-2011 05:47 AM

Sounds reasonable to me, but I would not regard them as the primary characteristics required.

Digitizingqueen 10-26-2011 05:50 AM

I think you need a creative spirit and time to quilt! forget the rest... I mean really what about art quilters?
