I would like to take my Featherweight with me on the plane to San Francisco next month. I checked out the TSA regs and since they suggested checking with the airline, I wrote to Delta. I got the run-around as I see it; just a recitation of the regs I already knew about. I needed a definitive answer as I do not want my machine to be confiscated!!!. Then I thought "There has to be someone on the board who has experience of this !" Help! :(

I would LOVE to know the answer to this as we're planning a trip in April for the month and would LOVE to take my FW. Anybody know anything?

I know 10 years ago you could take them easy because we did it all the time but I haven't heard of anyone doing it since then.

I think that if you had your needles and pins and scissors in your checked luggage you might be OK...oh, forgot the seam ripper...you know that we could do some serious damage with a seamripper... :oops:

I took a featherweight on jetblue from Fl to NY carryon. No problem, but she was searched.

Poor little thing. Hope they weren't too intrusive! :)

I'm flying American - I'll have to call them and see what they have to say.

It has to fit under the seat. Remove the needle. Be prepared to prove it's a sewing machine and you might even have to plug it in. The airlines don't call the shots ... TSA does (even if they don't know it). Never send it through with your luggage. OR you can take it to one of those pack'n'ship places. They'll pack it up and mail it for you. I shipped a JanomeJem (11lbs) from east coast to west coast .... cost just under $50 for the packing and shipping. If it gets broken they pay. Have fun on your trip.

I can't see why not. The needle might be the only issue.

The first time we flew right after 9/11 - like 3 weeks later. They checked everything - took pictures with camera and then removed and threw away the batteries. Same w/a little flashlight I always travel with..threw away the batteries. Had to run my FW and then they threw away the needle. I was smart and I had put my extra needles in checked luggage. When she goes now - I ship her ahead.

If you can carry a pair of scissors with a 4 inch blade, why do you need to remove the needle? The only issue is that you can only take one piece and carry on. If you are planning to have just the machine it should be no problem. Also, I know is called a feather weight but I don't find it light. Can you lift it up into the cabinet and then back out? Often I find that you can get easy help getting it up but when the plane lands most people grab their bags and run. The attendants may be able to help you but you have to wait until the plane is empty.
