I have to cut 80 HST and 80 QST and sew one of each together to make 80 units. I've never made QST's before except when I made hour glass blocks once. When you make the QST, are all 3 sides the same measurement or is there one side different than the other two? I just want to make sure I sew the QST to the proper side of the HST. The diagram isn't really very clear. Just thought I'd ask your opinions.

I actually bookmarked all of your tutorials for future reference. I didn't want to lose that valuable info!

I'm not talking about blocks made of 2 half square triangles. I made 40 square in a square. I followed the directions given and I had to cut 40 hst out of squares and attach 1 on 2 opposite ends of a square. The next step was to cut 40 more and attach them on the other 2 opposite sides to finish with a square in a square. I'd never seen that particular block before, but it was pretty cool when it was completed.

I called the quilt shop that gave out the directions (it's a mystery quilt). The gal said when it comes to the QSTs, know that you are making the first half of flying geese. Once she said that, the diagram in the "clue" made sense. I said that while I couldn't remember what it was, I knew that there was a shortcut to making flying geese. She said to stick to the pattern. It may not be the shortcut, but at least I would learn the old fashioned way. She must be one of those people that doesn't cut corners. But I get how to make it now. I have to cut 80 HST and 80 QST and attach 1 QST on the right side of each HST. When I do it, I'll probably post a picture because the more I read that, the less sense it made and I know what I'm talking about. I'm hoping to work on them tonight, so I'll be able to post a pic soon.

Thanks Shelly for the link and doing the tutes in the first place. They are really informative and they are explained well enough that even a beginner like me understands!!

A QST will have one side longer than the other 2. Equilateral triangles would join together to form hexagons, not squares. Is this what you were asking?

Mmmm, That sounds interesting, sorry I got the wrong end of the stick before. Sounds like you're making some thing like this (see pic) wonder what they call half a flying goose :lol: (A) Sounds interesting, wonder what you're going to be using that piece to make, keep us posted I luv a good mystery. If you were to add another 1/2 sq triangle to the other side that would give you a flying geese unit (B), so that's probably what the lady ment when she said it was like making the first part of flying geese. Probably best to stick to instuctions for now. but please let us know how it's going. I'm very curious :wink:

Melissa, which shop's mystery quilt? I'll try to run by and get a copy. I may not be able to decipher it either, but I think I know someone who can help us out :wink:

Roben, I'm not sure where you are located, but the shop giving it out is in Omaha, NE.

Shelly, you are right on about the diagram. Once I have 80 "half geese" done, I have to cut 80 more HST and finish the flying geese blocks. I thought it was a bit odd to call them "half geese" but once you add the other HST it makes sense.

Once I have them made, I'll post a pic. The next "clue" comes out next Saturday so it may have to wait a bit.

I'm just across the river - I'll be heading into Omaha tonight or tomorrow to pick up some things, so it won't be a problem to have an excuse to go to one of the quilt shops :wink: DH will just use the trip as an excuse to eat out :D

Wow...I didn't realize you were so close. The store is Country Sampler at 120th and Center on the north side of Center next to Burger King. The pattern is called Guilty as Charged and you can get all 3 clues (so far) at the cutting desk towards the back left side of the store.

The pattern they are doing is free and they are hoping you want to spend a mint on their high dollar material. I got all my material at Walmart, but I dutifully go every 2 weeks to get my clue. I can't wait until next spring when they do the BOM. Their fabrics are such high quality and it's 5.00 for the year if you keep up. They always end up so pretty!!

Feel free to pm me if you need anything. If you like Chinese there's a good chinese place with a make-your-own grill just east of the shop (next to JoAnn's fabrics) at 85th and Center. I don't think the Country Sampler is doing the same mystery quilt. It wasn't really clear in their newsletter. If you have any problems getting the back clues let me know.
