I have made 1/2 & 1/4 square triangles in a lot of different ways, but have never tried triangulations, the paper similar to thangles (you sew on the line, rotary cut, tear off the paper & end up w/perfect 1/2 sq triangles). For some things the thangles work great, but has anyone tried triangulations? are you happy w/them? not happy?
I know you can purchase a CD & download the size & amt you need forever...as opposed to thangles, which you can only buy one size per pkg of several hundred. Printing my own sounds cheaper at first, until you factor in ink/paper. But...are they worthwhile in the first place? So many questions, so little time...

I just bought the CD and used them for the first time. AWESOME and I highly recommend the CD. Fast, easy and perfect without having to deal with rulers and bias edges.

Rhonda, thanks for the tip! - that is an interesting method - & I'll definitely try it:) What size HST do you get starting with 21/2" strips? If you are working from a pattern that calls for a specific size, how do you figure out width of strip, template size, etc? Just wondering how it's adapted to needing different sizes.

I use them and they are pretty cool

I have used Thangles - little hard to line up - but my LQS told me about Ta-Da's - it is a fusible that you iron on to the wrong side then follow lines for sewing and cutting - so you get about 40 HST' from one session.

With Triangulations you get more sizes than you can buy with Thangles and you can print out as many or as few pages as you need. And it is nice to have this cd available when it is late night and you need to make hst. More than once i've needed some Thangles and it is late night and the stores are closed. Oh yes, I love my Triangulations!

As imatopper said, Triangulations come in many more sizes so you get just what you need. I love it.

Turn your template on point and measure from the center to the edge (point) add at least a 1/2" for seam allowances. That will be the width of your strips. I would add another 1/4" for a little wiggle room. You still won't have alot of waste leftover.

A 2 1/2" template uses a 2 1/2" wide strip. I use 2 1/2" for a 12 1/2" quilt block if you are making a 6 block by 6 block grid. As in 6 HSTs across by 6 rows or 36 HSTs.

The size of your template will depend on what you are making. If you are making an 18" finished quilt block you would need a 3 1/2" template if using the 6 x 6 grid.

It is important to sew a straight seam and it is very important to cut accurately. But it is a quick and easy way to make the HSTs and you dont' have to spend any money. There is no math too! LOL I don't actually measure my strips once I have the feel of how wide they need to be I just rough cut with out measuring.
