I will be traveling to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. Leaving on July 8th. So of course I will be looking for fabric!!!!! I would be willing to take some of my own from the states and trade. Does anyone have any suggestions or have you ever done this. I can't wait!!! This is a trip of a life time for my daughter and myself.
|
Wow!! I am so jealous. Have a great trip.

Oh what fun. I can't wait to see what you come home with. Have a great time.
|
Lucky you to be able to take a wonderful trip! I have no clue what you might take to trade. Have you contacted anyone using the internet? Perhaps if you google "fabric," or "bartering," and the country you might get a hit.
Take pictures to share! |
Have fun,
can you take like fat quarters with you and 1/2 yard pieces of fabric, to trade enjoy your trip |
What a wonderful trip!! I hope you have a fabulous time!!!
We do have a memeber on here from Jordan...... Maybe you would like to contact her!!! |
I hope you have a wonderful time :D:D:D
Maybe take 1 yard pieces of calicos, tonals,... making sure it is not a fabric that would offend a religion or culture. I bet there will be many fun trades to be made :D:D:D |
does anyone know the lady from Jordan
|
Lucky you! DD went to Egypt last year with college. She had such a great time!
|
Trading fabrics is such a neat idea! I'm sure other quilters or sewists would be very open to trading. Have a fun time on your trip and let us know how international bartering goes. It really is a small world when you consider all the quilters and sewists.
|
Oh, you are in for a treat. You will love these places. I visited there few times, but I was not into quilting then, so don't know about specifics for that. I am sure hotel staff and locals can guide you to fabric stores there. You'd probably find many in open-air markets, and you'd be surprised at the high quality of materials you can get at a very reasonable prices. At least that was my experience with clothing and such. If I were you, I wouldn't take many fabrics for trade (I don't know how much trading you'd be able to do) to leave space in my suitcase for goodies I'd be buying, remember weight is limited.
Have a safe and wonderful trip, you'll love it! |
I am so jealous
What a wonderful trip you have in store for you and your family. Just the thought of seeing all that different fabric is exciting, let alone all the beautiful places. Have a safe trip and remember, if you don't have room in your suitcases, you can mail it home!  Take tons of pictures, this is a "Trip of a Lifetime!" |
What a great idea!
If this is your first trip overseas please take time to make sure that all of your prescriptions are legal in the countries that you are going to. I mentioned this to a friend of mine a few years ago when she was traveling to Lithuania and when she checked, several of hers had to be changed. She was so happy to have been saved from highly possible arrest. Just because certain meds are legal here doesn't mean they are in other countries and a lot of countries have a 0 tolerance for what they deem as illegal drugs. |

My sister had several exchange students thru the years and anything Texas was super cool!
|
my friends just returned from Egypt. she has a celiacs disease and could not fiind much that she could eat. glad she brought her own oatmeal. she said they( Chefs)had no knowledge of what contained flour. also they had 2 armed guards with them on the bus they toured on. She was scared. so be very careful. and be aware of your surroundings. Egypt was on her bucket list.
|
Be safe, take your camera and we all want to hear about your trip when you get back - Have a great time.

you can PM them and ask them |
I would check with customs before taking fabric anywhere. There may be duties you'll have to apy and it may not be worth it.Just a suggestion.
|
God Speed. Will keep you and family in our prayers. Enjoy your trip and take lots of pictures.

The Israelis always have incredible quilts at International so they must have great fabric stores or at the outdoor stands.
There prices are much higher than ours or were last year.$18.-22. per metre. We went on to China and found fantastic fabrics, left my clothes and filled my suitcases with fabric, cashmere sweaters, silk undies and wore my pearls back and went right thru customs. Even their prices are higher now. It was fairly safe, we had guards on the buses but they were nice and chatted with us. Have a ball and God speed. |
since they measure in metres, do they even have fats there? they don't even have our yards. better check.
|
Make sure that you go to Petra! It is amazing.

I was in Israel a few years ago and I was SO glad I started taking probiotic tablets a week before and continued to take them twice a day while in the middle east. I was the only one in our group that did not get any kind of intestinal problem. In Norway we have pills called Idoform.
When you barter for things remember that the real barter begins when you get them down to 50% of the price! It is after that the fun begins. Don't show the palm of your hand (as in the gesture for stop) or the sole of your shoe in Arab establishments. If you enter an Arab store "and accept the offer of a cup of tea" you are EXPECTED TO BUY SOMETHING! Some of the best deals may be on spices that are really expensive here. Saffron, cardamom, nutmeg etc is a great price there. Be sure to seal them in a plastic container or jar in your suitcase. Plastic bags don't hold in the aroma. Take your wet wipes, tissue packs (to use as toilet tissue), antiseptic gel for toilets and your hands after... Be sure to pack anti-diarrhea meds- (Imodium) as well as anti-nausea meds, anti-itch creams. Health care and drug stores in Israel - very good.. Egypt, not so good, Jordan, I have no idea. The biggest risk factor is not drinking enough water! 1 liter/ hour is a necessity, if you wait until you feel thirsty it is too late! Don't under estimate the impact of dehydration. Geeze, I feel like a worry wart, but these are little things that can make a real difference in having a good time. Hugs |
When I travelled and bought things, I would send them back to a friend in my home town, marked gift, to avoid duties.
