I am trying to follow the Missouri Star Quilt on making a Tube Pillow it says 27 inches wide but what is the length of the material? This is probably a dumb question but when I cut the material it looks huge. Please help me. Thanks a bunch

Cut width of fabric 27" long so you end up with a piece 27"x 22"(when you fold it in half) Make sense?

it is confusing at first but then it just clicks after the 10th time you watch the vid. at least that is how it went for me.
|
I make mine a little longer 28 or 29 for Queen or 30 inches for king size pillows.
|
Ok I know you guys are going to think I am so stupid. I am watching it and she is cutting it off the bolt. So I put the fold to the left and I cut the two peices 27 inches wide I am so confused my material is huge after I cut it.

The fold would not be on the left if Im thinking correctly, the fold is at the top (or the bottom even), but not left or right.

You cut 27 long, not side to side.you will sew the salvage edges together after the rest is done.Connie in CO

So do I have a fold on the bottom pillow case and sew up the sides?
|
i make pillowcases from a free pattern i have a print out of. 27x41 is the measurement. then i think 12 inches of focus end fabric and an inserted one of 3 inches folded. the 41 or so is the fold that would go around the pillow. not 22. maybe they mean cutting 22 with the fabric folded.
here is a freebie http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpa...se-pattern.htm and this one http://www.craftandfabriclinks.com/p...ses/cases.html |
I sew up the bottom and the side. The top of pillowcase will have the nice cuff already done.
|
so then the width is the width of the material? I put the fold to the side?
|
|
Thanks everyone I think I finally got it.
|
You have to show us you pillowcases.Sorry i had to go to town to pick up our car that was being worked on.
|
Go to allpeople quilt.com I make a ton of pillow cases. I have use lace edging for the 2" trim. I found a bargain in the garment district in Los Angeles.
|
Here is a simple pillowcase pattern. It's dimension are a little smaller but you can go with the ones on the Ytube.
Body of pillowcase is cut 27"with the fold on the bottom, then trim off the selvege on the top. Open the cut body and attache the cuff to the long side. Begin sewing case together at the cuff, reinforce your first stistches, continue down the side and then along the back and your case is done. I usually zig zag over the seams to keep pillowcase from fraying. http://conkerrcancer.org/pillowdirections.html |

Okay, lets see if I can help. When you purchase your fabric... it is folded. I buy one yard and use access on another pillowcase... perfect. One yard..minus 27 inches leaves 9 inches for the cuff on second case.
Now lay your fabric out as it was on the bolt.... fold on the left side. Measure down 27 inches and cut... leaving 9 inches. That seems to be your question. I have made dozens of these and they are sooooo much fun. Good luck. |
Great patterns. Thanks for sharing

Maybe seeing it done in photos will help? I like Missouri Quilt videos but had to resort to a photo tute for the pillow case. |
your fold and selvedges become the long sides of the pillowcase. the cut ends become the hemmed (trimmed) and sewn ends.
Try laying your folded fabric on a pillowcase. Help you visualize. ...you said you "got it". Just making sure. :) |

I follow the Missouri video completely. The first link by native texan is similar but an extra step.

This is the pattern that I have used forever. I especially love the measurements. It is from Utah State university.

You already know how to cut a 2 1/2 in strip by the WOF. Think of this a cutting a 27 in strip by WOF.
|
Looking forward to seeing your pillowcases, I think the best sites to help you are already here. I use the great American Pillow Challenge site the most.

you can also look up Magic Pillowcase or Burrito or Hot Dog Pillowcase directions. They are quite easy to follow. Or you can PM me & I'll send you my directions for the class I taught on making them. You do need to make several to really get the "feel" of how it's done.

Nope, it's not a dumb question. When you take a 42" wide fabric with a length of 27" it looks too big, but folded in half it's just right. I've made a half dozen or so, but they all come out and fit great over regular pillows.
|
IT LOOKS VERY EASY TO DO. HOPE THE ADVICE GIVEN HELP YOU
|
Thank you Thank you Thank you for asking. LOL I thought I got this and after I completed my pillow case it was very skinny. I know I did something wrong. I had to call my mother who ALSO explained: When you buy the fabric its on the bolt and folded already. I guess it didn't help that I had purchased pre-measured fabric in a package folded differently. Anyway--- at some point I will try it again.
All you seasoned quilters/sew(ers) are so patient with those of us who are newbies. It is amazing how easy it seems until you go to do it. Then all these words that we may not be use to start flying around, selveged , biase/ and so on and so forth. Thanks to you all. |
