Tumbling blocks pattern

Does any one have a link to a tumbling block pattern made from 1/2 square triangles? I made a quilt from it years ago and now can't dine my pattern.

Iwantasew 01-20-2012 06:16 PM

There is a good one with no set in seams on utube. Google it. It is by Marci Baker at Annie's attic.

mucky 01-20-2012 07:19 PM

Thanks but I want the one using half square triangles.

amyjo 01-20-2012 08:08 PM

try Kitsie on the QB, she had a beautiful one on here awhile back.

mucky 01-20-2012 08:17 PM

How do I search for her?

Tumbling Blocks are hexagons. Six sides, six 60 degree angles.

Are you sure you don't mean 60 degree triangles instead of HST patches (45 degree angles)?

Which is the Marci Baker method/pattern referenced upthread - the 60 degree triangles are sewn into strips, which are then joined.
You do need to watch your color/value placement.
But there are no diamond shaped pieces.
Ergo, no set-in seams.

Not quite sure how you're going to get a hexagon with patches cut with a 45 degree angle.

Do you have a picture of the quilt you made?

And here's the recent hexagon quilt posted by Kitsie:

Not the classic Tumbling Blocks, but different color placement. It's GORGEOUS.
I think this is the tutorial she used :

Made with 60 degree triangles.

Was it made with Square-in-a-Square blocks? Like this one:http://www.sewfabulousquilts.com/Tumblingblock.php

No. Half Square Triangles

Then just take MST's diagram and put an X in the centre of the box ... voila, HSTs would do it ... though to me, you are taking away from the "real" Tumbling Blocks idea. Depends what you want!

You could also do it with Flying Geese if that's what you wanted!

mucky 01-21-2012 03:37 PM

Thanks. I'll have to think on that idea.

Thanks, AmyJo, but I have tumbling blocks only on my bucket list! I did a recent one with hexagons and a kaleidoscope with Octagons

Mucky, I happened to see your post. Good luck!

Actually MTS, that wasn't one I used - I got some ideas from a ruler ad and figured it from there! Will have to see if I kept the reference.
I started to make a sort of tutorial for myself on doing hex's and octa's. It's Word document and I'd be happy to e-mail you a copy if it would help! It just makes it so easy. Just shoot me a PM.

I really want to do a TBlocks but the original way, not with the seam like Marti Michell does.

MacThayer 01-21-2012 06:24 PM

There's a quilt on Clotilde that looks like what you want. Check it out. It's called "Shadow Play". Here's the link:

FoUnd what Imwanted on the WonderCut ruler website. Thanks for everyone's help.

Kitsie 01-21-2012 11:21 PM

Yeah, that's where I got the ideas for the hex's and octas. Love that Clotilde pattern! Would like to see how its done! Anyone done it?

I think this would work. Hope you understand the graphic. If not I'll see what
I can do tomorrow. My bed is calling me.

That looks like it's also constructed using S-in-a-S blocks (as is Easy Peezy's drawing). Probably even more patterns out there showing the same method.

If someone were going to do the faux TB pattern, it's certainly seems the easiest way to go - so many construction possibilities, and easily adjustable to any size. Also, the setting - straight or on-point - allows for even more variations.

I thought I saw a reference to Jaybird on your thread, so I just included the link.
And I agree about doing it the original way - there is just something aesthetically pleasing about those 60 diamonds!

FoUnd what Imwanted on the WonderCut ruler website.
Link? Just curious.

I did get that you wanted to do it with HST's - but there is a difference between HST patches and HST blocks.
Which is why I suggested the S-in-a-S block.:)
It was hard to tell from your picture where the seam lines were, and if the square was one piece of fabric or seamed.
Looked like one piece to me.

At a quick glance, all the references to TB patterns on the Wondercut site use 60 degree triangles. Although, I did see a S-in-a-S block made with HST blocks (with all outside bias edges - yuck).

Slightly OT, here's an audacious floor treatment (probably not a great suggestion for anyone with balance problems).

Hi, Easy! How're you doing? Am I right to assume this design uses HST's, also? Looks very doable. 'Spose you could also use a center square on point and sew the triangles to it. Boy, it would take a lot of accurate sewing!!

mucky 01-22-2012 10:58 AM

Yes that looks like it. Thanks.

Hi Kitsie! I'm doing ok, thanks. Busy, busy today. And you? What are you sewing these days?
You could do the center square on point too. Or you could do lots of HST's using this method.

OMG!! That floor block design is great, but can you imagine trying to walk on that...think it would make me dizzy!!

Kitsie 01-22-2012 01:23 PM

Oh, that floor!!!! I'd feel as if I were going upstairs all the time!
