Twister Quilt template ???

OK .....I have caught the bug to make a twister quilt....need to know if YOU have made one and did you use one of the twister templates for like a 10" precut.....or did you do it the 'old fashioned way'...watched two videos on youtube this morning using the template almost seems to easy.....is there really that much waste....do I need to buy the template or can I make my own......Will really appreciate any help...

I used the ruler and 10" precuts. Quick quilt to make but there is a lot of waste. Use the waste in a scrappy quilt.

I have used both the 10 inch and 5 inch templates. Both in one quilt. There are a lot of scraps left over that can be used in later scrappy quilts.

I used the 5" ruler and it was pretty easy. The wreath wall hangings I did turned out quite well. There is waste, but as mentioned before you can use it for scrappies *Ü*

I have done many Twister quilts and I use the Twister Ruler (for 10" squares), the Lil Twister (for 5" squares), Primitive Pinwheels Ruler (for 3 1/2" squares) and the Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheels Ruler (for 2 1/2" squares). I don't make my own rulers. I like the ones that are available.

I made a twister using the 10 inch but cut my own squares. Easy to do and just used the 'waste' in a border in that quilt

How much waste are we talking about? I have both the 10" and 5" twister but have yet to try them. Now I'm worried about the waste. I've never done a scrappy quilt before. Is it like half waste? Quarter waste?

If you can't find the size you want, then you can make them. If the sizes available will work for you I strongly recommend them. The store bought rulers have little bumps on the back that make it easier to place the ruler over the intersections (bump where the seams are) and get a nice cut. There is a bit of waste but if you are careful cutting out your twister squares you can use the scraps for a neat edge or border.

I think that's why they came out with the 2 mini templates. You can use up the waste with the tiny templates.

Having said this, I hope it doesn't discourage you! The tool is a lot of fun to use and I'm sure you will come up with a use for the left overs.

Regarding buying the tool vs. making your own template, I would go for the tool. It has little feet that help the tool sit flat on the fabric which has a bulky seam. Also, if you have a rotating cutting mat, this is the time to dig it out and use it!

I made some twister quilts with the big template for 10" squares. The waste squares are approx. 4 1/2 ". I squared tehm up to 4 1/2 " and just sews teh blocks together for a baby quit and sewed chanille down the seams. It looked awesome and I used up my scraps.
