In 'my' world -

A UFO (unfinished object) has gone into a box somewhere and hasn't even been looked at in weeks (years?)

A WIP (work in progress) is something that is actually being worked on and will probably be finished in a reasonable length of time.

If it's started but you haven't worked on it 'in a while' it's a UFO, especially if you've started another project. If you are actively working on it, it's a WIP. The amount of time allotted to 'in a while' is up to you. If you are a slow quilter, it might not be worked on for a month or more, but it's still a WIP. Clear as mud?

That would be my understanding. Now to get those UFOs out of the box and dusted off.

PhD - Piled Higher and Deeper - was my first 'definition' of PhD

I like the PhD, both definitions. That goes along with the PIGS, Projects In Grocery Sacks. Guess I have PIGS that are PhDs.

I definitely am going to borrow that one for a long time. I have lots of PHDs.

Angel Bear 06-26-2013 09:35 AM

I've never heard of PHDs or PIGS before. LOL!:p

I like having PhD's. What are quilt tops considered? UFO or WIP?

It's a FLIMSY! :D

I consider a quilt top waiting to be quilted a finished quilted top. And that's all.

To me, it's not a UFO or a WIP--at least not until it becomes a "sandwich"--at which time it is either a UFO or WIP. :)

I have a stack of tops that I hope to work again in the fall, (for charity, mostly) but I don't really want to handle all that weight and batting until it is cooler.

I like to think of them all as WIP's then there is some hope that they will be finished - one day!!!!!!

ckcowl 06-26-2013 01:09 PM

UFO - unfinished object---may never be finished- life has moved on
WIP- work in progress--- working on it- will be finished (soon) :)

mom-6 06-26-2013 03:20 PM

UFO - I haven't worked on it recently and probably won't for another month or so. In my world this is further separated into sandwiched (and maybe some quilting done) or just top completed.

WIP - I'm currently working on it or it has been set aside for only a few days or a couple weeks to work on a priority project (or to try out that one I just have to try right now. Lol!) Usually have two or three in this status.

At guild we all say PHD. It includes UFOs and WIPs.
