I found this rust fabric at my favorite thrift store, 3 1/2 yards long and 50 inches wide. It is a hand (wood block?) blocked print as each block print is a little different. The fabric has an interesting weave. I did a burn test so it is not synthetic. I have not washed it yet but I think this one calls for a color catcher for sure.
Does anyone have any clues as to what this fabric is? Block printed fabric Closeup showing weave The weave pattern on the black edge |
I haver never seen this before, but it is interesting.

Could it be a jacquard?

It's possible that someone purchased a bunch of fabric and was test running a block print on it. Some of the coconut trees look like they had too much paint on the block and so the appearance is different on each set of three trees with some looking like it bled a little to make the trunks of the trees larger or fronds wider/darker. There is an indication that it was block printed as your second photo shows a little bit of smearing on the top frond. Also, the weave to the fabric, almost reminds me of damask (is that how you spell it) and might have been dyed that orange color. Maybe it was an old tablecloth that was used for the testing of a crafter. The black might be brush painted.

Looks like a rayon scarf print.

ditto ... on it looking like a damask table cloth. Would it possibly be a linen or a linen blend?
Perhaps someone was just experimenting to see how it'd turn out. |
I thought damask also.

All of your ideas are good. The fabric does have the "feel" of linen. Well, off to the washing machine and see how it comes out.
