Upholstery Quilt!! Got enough pieces.

I NEVER make anything for myself! I figured it is my turn, so I'm gonna make myself an upholstery quilt to save on batting. I have twice the amount shown in the pic!


Anyone got any tips on how to remove the paper glued onto the back of the upholstery samples?

I made one yres ago, all otton with scotchguarded. Came out great.

The ones I have here (I was bagging them for Goodwill) come right off the cotton fabrics.
Soaking would loosen it but also might create a mess.

Is the paper covering the entire back of each sample?
Because, if not, if it were me, I'd just hack it off.

You didn't pay anything for the material, and wasting hours trying to soak it off for another inch or two of useable fabric hardly seems worth it.
There's certainly enough there for a couple of quilts, if not more.

Have fun playing and designing with all the different pieces instead, if possible.

I agree with the others - just cut the paper bits off. I found that I could not get all of the glue off the samples I had, and since I wasn't going to wash the project I was making I didn't want weird changes in texture. Use a heavy needle, keep your stitches on the small side, and your seam allowance large - many of the upholstery fabrics I have used frayed like crazy!

I had some with fabric all over the back. Get one of those mesh laundry bags, put a small load in one. Fill your washer up with cold water and let them soak for a few hours then let it run through the cycles. It will take a good bit of the paper off and soften them up.

oh wow, you do have enough! i made one many years ago and cut up the upholstery fabrics and made blocks. not fun!

I have tried a lot of things to get the paper off. Even if I get the paper off it still leaves a residue on the fabric most of the time. I gave up and just started cutting it off. Those samples books are also great for purses, diaper bags etc. Very sturdy and cute.

It will be beautiful!! I just cut the paper off. I have some beautiful pieces some are gorgeous florals. Im making a crazy quilt with mine. Very pleased so far.

I've found 2 techniques that work on some of the glues. You can try pressing from the paper side with a lot of steam. The other method is microwaving for just a few seconds. Like 5 or 10. Stay right there, don't walk away! If these methods work, the paper will peel right off. There might be residual glue, I just iron on a piece of thin muslin. If neither of these works, then just cut the paper off as suggested.
